PHASE II : Formation des aigrettes et pollinisation. La formation des aigrettes se produit environ 40 à 70 jours après l'émergence de la plante pour les variétés de 90 à 130 jours. L'aigrette(la fleur) émerge du verticille des feuilles un ou deux jours avant qu'elle ne commence à perdre le pollen. La perte de pollen commence deux à trois jours avant que la soie n’ émerge de l'extrémité de l'épi et continue pendant cinq à huit jours. Si les conditions sont favorables, toutes les soies émergent dans les trois à cinq jours et la plupart d’entre elles sont pollinisées le premier jour. Chaque soie est reliée à un ovule(un grain potentiel). Lorsqu'un grain de pollen se pose sur une soie, il en sort un tube de pollen qui va rejoindre le cœur de la soie et fertilise l'ovule situé à l'autre extrémité en quelques heures.
