3, record 9, French, - circulation%20convective

By regulating flake water content, snow can be deliberately made from light powder to wet base snow, and to withstand higher temperatures before melting. 4, record 15, English, - snowmaking

... what makes some extratropical cyclones produce catastrophically damaging winds. ... [Keith Browning and Pete Clark] have identified a mesoscale flow which they call the Sting Jet. It originates in the cloud head of a rapidly deepening cyclone and gathers speed as it descends towards the tip of the cloud head when it begins to hook around the cyclone centre ... The Sting Jet was first identified observationally from a reanalysis of the Great Storm of October 1987 where the damaging winds were shown to be emanating from the evaporating tip of the hooked cloud head. It has since been reproduced in high-resolution runs with the mesoscale version of the Unified Model. The Sting Jet is distinct from the usual strong-wind region associated with the warm conveyor belt and main cold front. There are indications that conditional symmetric instability and evaporation both play a role in its formation but the importance of these processes remains to be quantified. 4, record 31, English, - sting%20jet

4, record 56, French, - puits%20canadien

While the simple blast cell is the most prolific technology today for freezing bulk materials, processors are investigating other forms of inexpensive freezing that can drop temperature quickly and flexibly. Plate freezing and continuous belt freezing are two examples. In plate freezing, the product is generally placed in a leak-proof bag, although in some cases direct contact is used, and then compressed between two plates that are held at -40°F. Freezing times of just a few hours are possible, depending on the thickness of the product. Continuous freezing belt systems are similar to a blast cell in terms of air flow and temperature, with the primary difference being that instead of staging palletized product, boxed product moves on a slow conveyor belt within an enclosure. This allows differently shaped and sized boxes to be loaded simultaneously and usually requires a 24-hour dwell time to reach zero. It is a bit slower than plate freezing, but with more product flexibility. 1, record 68, English, - belt%20freezing

A turbofan is a type of aircraft engine consisting of a ducted fan which is powered by a gas turbine. Part of the airstream from the ducted fan passes through the gas turbine core, providing oxygen to burn fuel to create power. However, most of the air flow bypasses the engine core, and is accelerated by the fan blades in much the same manner as a propeller. The combination of thrust produced from the fan and the exhaust from the core is a more efficient process than other jet engine designs, resulting in a comparatively low specific fuel consumption. 5, record 87, English, - bypass%20engine

1, record 93, French, - vent%20de%20terre

Thermal lift is created by areas of warm air rising from the land. As the land heats up with the warmth of the sun, the air above it will begin to warm by the heat radiating from the land. This is especially true over terrain such as a freshly plowed field or a paved parking area. As the air heats, it will begin to rise and allow cooler air to move in to replace it. This air, in turn, will heat up, rise, and you will get a continuous current of rising air. As long as the air is rising at a rate greater than a glider sinks while in flight, the glider can sustain lift. 4, record 96, English, - thermal%20ascent

1, record 97, French, - %C3%A9changeur%20de%20chaleur%20%C3%A0%20contre%2Dcourant
