Thermal stratification of the atmosphere is characteristic of the Nocturnal Boundary Layer (NBL), particularly in basin topography where surface cooling combines with drainage flows from competing sources to create a complex thermal structure that can play an important role in transport and diffusion of pollution. 5, record 5, English, - thermal%20stratification
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Atmospheric stability describes the thermal stratification or vertical temperature structure of the atmosphere. Generally, six or seven different classes of atmospheric stability are used to describe the atmosphere. These classes range from extremely unstable (when atmospheric turbulence is greatest) to extremely stable (when atmospheric mixing is at a minimum and wind speeds are low). When the atmosphere is unstable, pollutants can rapidly diffuse through a large volume of the atmosphere. When the atmosphere is stable, pollutants will diffuse much more slowly in a vertical direction 6, record 5, English, - thermal%20stratification

4, record 5, French, - stratification%20thermique
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 CONT
5, record 5, French, - stratification%20thermique

Hurricane spiral bands consist of individual convective cells associated with small-scale cumulus convection. The thunderstorms within the spiral bands are organized into regions of rising and sinking air. In contrast to the motion of the band, which moves considerably slower than the mean wind speed, the individual cells tend to move with the mean wind in the layer in which they are embedded. These convective cells, which have typical lifetimes of 20-40 min, are a result of a general lifting within the band of convectively unstable air. 1, record 6, English, - convectively%20unstable%20air

The squall line thunderstorm is a solid or broken line of thunderstorms that form ahead of a large scale boundary such as a cold front. Although a squall line thunderstorm can produce a tornado, it is most likely to produce strong straight-line winds, downbursts, and large hail. Winds associated with a squall line can easily exceed 100 mph and give the appearance (and sound) a tornado has struck. 4, record 8, English, - squall%20line

» 6, record 8, French, - ligne%20de%20grains

Microbursts result as a strong downflow bursts from a parent cloud and strike the Earth's surface at an angle (usually) off-the-vertical. The air striking the Earth flows out from the centre (called an "outflow") at speeds which depend on the downflow speed and striking angle. As the outflowing air undercuts the surface air, a vertical roll begins to develop that eventually encircles the downflow centre as a horizontal vortex ring. 1, record 13, English, - vortex%20ring

Backward curved and backward inclined blade fans. Backward curved and backward inclined blades are slightly less efficient, cost less, and generate slightly more noise than the airfoil type. The number of blades is usually ten to sixteen and the fan scroll is the same as for airfoil fans. Backward curved blades ... are constant thickness airfoil blades and are preferred over straight backward inclined blades ... because they allow smoother air flow and are stronger. Backward curved blade fans will operate over the full range of air flow from wide open to shut off, whereas backward inclined blade fans are unstable under flow condition below the design point. These fans are used in industrial applications in which fouling of the blades by airborne contaminants would minimize the efficiency advantage of airfoil blade fans. 2, record 14, English, - backward%20inclined%20fan

2, record 14, French, - ventilateur%20%C3%A0%20r%C3%A9action
