Buffer Blasting. Buffer blasting is possibly the most simple method of control blasting and involves a modification to the last row of the main blast pattern. Modifications are limited to reduced burden, spacing, and explosive loads. The aim is to limit ground shock from the blast. The method is usually employed in conjunction with some other control blasting technique, such as pre-splitting, and its results are quite economical. Buffer blasting can only be used by itself when the ground is fairly competent. It may produce minor crest fracturing or backbreak but the amount of damage is less than would be produced by the main production blast if no control blasting was used at all. 2, record 5, English, - buffer%20blasting

While most species of timber are susceptible to termite attack, the degree of susceptibility varies. Usually the durability of timbers against termites is assessed by what is known as the "graveyard test" in which stakes of standard dimension, of different species of timber, are arranged vertically in soil in a termite-infested site, with the top of the stakes protruding above ground like the headstones in a graveyard, and assessing the damage at intervals. Based on this, timbers are rated as susceptible, moderately resistant, and highly resistant. 4, record 6, English, - graveyard%20test

3, record 9, French, - circulation%20convective

Snowmaking is the process of creating snow by dispersing minute water particles and air under pressure into freezing ambient air. This produces a snowflake lattice structure that is similar to natural snow. By regulating flake water content, snow can be deliberately made from light powder to wet base snow, and to withstand higher temperatures before melting. 4, record 12, English, - snowmaking

2, record 23, French, - d%C3%A9p%C3%B4t%20atmosph%C3%A9rique%20humide

All helicopters incorporate a one-way clutch system that allows the rotor blades to continue to rotate under the effects of inertia and autogiro-type flight in the event of engine failure. ... the flow of the airstream through the helicopter rotor disk is reversed. The force of gravity continues the operation of the rotor blade, thereby reducing the rate of descent and allowing a successful emergency landing. Because of the time required to effect this change and the necessity for other flight maneuvers, these characteristics led to the development of a restricted area of operations of the helicopter known as the deadman's curve, bounding that area of height and speed in which the helicopter should not be operated. 1, record 24, English, - deadman%27s%20curve

power-on: is a situation when the pilot maintains the helicopter in a hover while in contact with the ground or other surface. Usually done when the landing surface needs to be tested before the pilot allows the full weight of the machine and passengers to rest on the surface.

4, record 50, French, - puits%20canadien

An airborne wind turbine is a design concept for a wind turbine that is supported in the air without a tower. A tether would be used to transmit energy to the ground. The main disadvantage is that kites and "helicopters" come down when there is insufficient wind. These schemes require a very long power cable and an aircraft exclusion zone. As of 2006, no commercial airborne wind turbines are in regular operation. 4, record 54, English, - airborne%20wind%20turbine

5, record 54, French, - %C3%A9olienne%20a%C3%A9rienne

Like other smut diseases, common smut of corn derives its name from the sooty masses of teliospores found on infected host plants ... The most obvious symptoms are tumor-like galls that vary in size from less than 1 cm to more than 30 cm (0.4-12 inch) in diameter. All meristematic tissues are susceptible to infection. Galls are found most frequently on ears, tassels, stalks, nodal shoots, and mid-ribs of leaves ... Even though galls may form on many above-ground parts of the plant, infection is local (i.e., the host is not colonized systemically). Occasionally, galls develop beneath the soil surface when the apical meristem of a young plant is infected. 6, record 66, English, - corn%20smut

Air sparging is the process of injecting air directly into groundwater. Air sparging remediates groundwater by volatilizing contaminants and enhancing biodegradation. It is akin to blowing bubbles from a straw into a bowl of water. As the bubbles rise, the contaminants are removed from the groundwater by physical contact with the air (i.e., stripping) and are carried up into the unsaturated zone (i.e., soil). As the contaminants move into the soil, a soil vapor extraction system is usually used to remove vapors. 2, record 68, English, - air%20sparging

Panaches horizontaux. Climate has a great influence on soil moisture conditions. The engineering behaviour of soils is governed in large measure by their moisture contents. Most clay subsoils exist in an approximate state of moisture equilibrium that may be seriously disrupted by construction drainage or irrigation. Lawn watering in urban area can have results equivalent to a substantial increase in rainfall ... This practice often results in a marked increase in subsoil moisture and volume and brings about new problems for shallow foundations. 2, record 76, English, - equilibrium%20moisture%20content

1, record 76, French, - %C3%A9quilibre%20hygroscopique

Temperatures generally increase with increasing depth in the earth as heat from deep inside the earth escapes. The geothermal gradient is a measure of how rapidly the temperature increases as a function of depth. Because the Denver Basin area is currently relatively quiet in terms of volcanic and earthquake activity, one might expect the average geothermal gradient to be about 30 degrees C/km. 1, record 89, French, - %C3%A9chantillonnage%20par%20aspiration

A detailed knowledge of the wind patterns at the drop location is used to calculate the required flight path and drop point. The flight path is maintained by the system's ability to pull slips which dump air from one side of the canopy. By incorporating wind data with this limited method of steering, the system has proven capable of landing an average of 48 meters away from the intended grid reference when deployed from 13 000 ft above ground level. This accuracy is phenomenal given that the present LF freefall cylinder rarely even hits a large drop zone when deployed from 5,000 feet above ground evel (AGL). AGAS is the cheapest precision airdrop system presently available. 2, record 99, English, - affordable%20guided%20airdrop%20system

2, record 100, French, - spectrom%C3%A8tre%20spatial%20fonctionnant%20en%20occultation%20solaire
