Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 DEF
... any solid or liquid that is brought on board a vessel to increase the draft, [to] change the trim, [to] regulate the stability or to maintain stress loads within acceptable limits. 2, record 1, English, - ballast
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Prior to the 1880s, ships used solid ballast materials such as rocks and sand, which had to be manually shoveled into cargo holds, and similarly discharged when cargo was to be loaded on board. If not properly secured, solid ballast was prone to shifting in heavy seas causing instability. With the introduction of steel-hulled vessels and pumping technology, water became the ballast of choice. 2, record 1, English, - ballast

3, record 1, French, - lest
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
3, record 1, French, - lest

The new regulations require all vessels stopping at Canadian ports to have ballast water treatment systems by 2030. The regulations represent a transition from the traditional method of exchanging ballast water in mid-ocean to the use of modern systems which clean ballast water of organisms before release. 1, record 2, English, - ballast%20water%20treatment%20system

1, record 2, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20traitement%20de%20l%27eau%20de%20ballast

There are three types of fluorescent circuits: rapid start, instant start and preheat. The preheat circuit was used when fluorescent lamp first came available. This technology is very little used today, except for low-wattage magnetic ballast applications such as compact fluorescents. A separate starting switch, called a starter, is used to aid in forming the arc. The filament needs some time to reach proper temperature so the lamp does not strike for a few seconds. 1, record 4, English, - preheat%20circuit
