On Christmas Day, while the spacecraft was completing its 10th revolution of the Moon, the service propulsion system engine was fired for three minutes 24 seconds, increasing the velocity by 3,875 km per hr and propelling Apollo 8 back toward the Earth, after 20 hours 11 minutes in lunar orbit. ... Parachute deployment and other reentry events were normal.

Trois jours plus tard, après une éventuelle correction de trajectoire à mi-parcours, le vaisseau est tout proche de la Terre. Seul va rentrer dans l'atmosphère terrestre le module de commande, petite capsule conique qui abrite les astronautes. Le moteur du module de service est mis à feu une dernière fois, pour placer le module de commande exactement dans le couloir de rentrée. Puis il est largué, et le module de commande est livré à son sort. Il pénètre dans l'atmosphère à une vitesse très élevée, et est freiné naturellement. Le frottement de l'air provoque un échauffement intense de la capsule, protégée par un bouclier thermique.

The Service Module will include four docking ports, one in the aft Transfer Chamber and three in the spherical forward Transfer Compartment: one facing forward, one facing up and one facing down. The aft docking port has a probe and cone docking mechanism to allow dockings by Progress resupply spacecraft and Soyuz piloted spacecraft. It also will be outfitted with an automated rendezvous and docking system. The forward docking ports will all have hybrid docking mechanisms to allow docking with Zarya using the forward-facing port; with a Russian Science Power Platform to be delivered later in assembly using the down-facing port.
