CARRE SERVICE DROIT [2 records]

Record 1 2012-07-16

English

Subject field(s)

DEF

The right-hand service court into which the server must serve when the score is "deuce". In other words, the right half of a tennis player's court as that player faces the opposing baseline.

OBS

The term "forehand court" is only valid if one were to assume that the recipient of the message is a righthander. Otherwise use one of the other synonyms. Other related term: station (e.g. to stand in the correct station before serving).

CONT

When you are serving from your forehand side, it's usually a good idea to give your receiver another wide-angle serve that takes him across his forehand sideline.

CONT

If your volley went to the other sideline (his backhand), you'll do just the reverse: you'll drift over into your own forehand court.

CONT

In delivering the service, the Server shall stand alternately behind the right and left Courts beginning from the right in every game.

CONT

The point score being 15-all, the Server, by mistake, serves from the left-hand Court. He wins the point. He then serves again from the right-hand Court, delivering a fault.

... the stroke that starts play.

CONT

[His] serve has lost its bite.

OBS

The server stands behind the baseline and has two tries to send the ball into the diagonally opposite service court.

OBS

Any motion, including underhand or sidearm is permissible, however, the overhead or overarm stroke is by far the most common. (The terms "overarm service" and "roundarm service" are rarely heard today.) There are basically three types of service: 1) the flat service; 2) the slice service; 3) the spin service. Note that the term "serve" is ambiguous in English. On the one hand it may refer to the result of going through (e.g. he can hit a very hard "serve"); finally, it may even refer to one of the two attempts allowed to complete a service (e.g. he is about to make his second "serve" - French: deuxième balle de service). On this last note, at Wimbledon, England, one hears the chair umpire call out "first service", rather than "first serve".
