Mise au point industriellement vers 1925, la calorisation superficielle de l'acier permet de conférer à ce dernier une résistance particulièrement importante à l'oxydation à haute température(850°C). On traite ainsi des pièces de fours(grilles, barres, plaques), de chaudières, des caisses de cémentation, des protecteurs pour cannes pyrométriques, etc., et tout autre matériel ayant à subir le maintien prolongé dans l'air à température élevée. On pratique la calorisation en chauffant les pièces en acier doux au contact d’un cément solide, constitué par un mélange de poudres de ferro-aluminium ou d’aluminium, d’alumine et de chlorure d’ammonium. Vers 900°C, il se produit une diffusion superficielle d’aluminium dans le fer, avec formation d’une solution solide et d’un composé défini riches en aluminium, sur une épaisseur pouvant atteindre 1 mm. 3, record 27, French, - calorisation
