The chlorination stage may be considered an extension of pulping in that it continues the delignification process which makes it possible to brighten the pulp by oxidation in the third and subsequent stages. Chlorination is most commonly done in upflow towers at about 3% consistency, and at temperatures from 20° to 60°C for a 10 - 60 min. reaction time. 2, record 19, English, - chlorination

The Kappa Factor is also known as the Active Chlorine Multiple (ACM). It is the sum of all chlorine compound additions to the first chlorination stage (converted to active chlorine equivalent, i.e. ClO2 wt% charge x 2.63) divided by the Kappa number of the pump entering the first chlorination stage. The amount of AOX formation is directly related to the Kappa factor; for any given pulp the relationship is linear in a Cl2-free sequence. An important relationship exists between the Kappa factor (and ClO2 substitution) and the tendency to form 2,3,7,8-TCDD. There is a need to operate in the vicinity of a Kappa factor of 0.17, even at high ClO2 substitution, to ensure that polychlorinated dioxins and furans are not formed. 2, record 29, English, - kappa%20factor

1, record 29, French, - facteur%20Kappa

An alkaline extraction is normally placed after a chlorination stage whereby the lignin and other colour-contributing components react with the chlorine and, while partially soluble in the acidic chlorination solution, the chlorinated compounds easily dissolve in a warm alkaline solution and are removed. An extraction step is also placed before the final chlorine dioxide stage to complete the lignin removal. Although an extraction stage makes the pulp darker, it is essential for achieving high brightness levels with minimum use of chemicals in subsequent stages. 1, record 32, English, - alkaline%20extraction

The principle of displacement bleaching is illustrated in Figure 11-24, along with its corresponding flowsheet notation. The development of the Kamyr atmospheric diffusion washer allowed the displacement principle to be applied commercially. Kamyr succeeded in mounting a series of diffusion units in a single tower to accomplish a multi-stage bleaching sequence. Typically, the chlorination is carried out at medium consistency and the chlorinated stock is then pumped to the bottom of the displacement tower incorporating stages EDED (Figure 11-27). To ensure that maximum brightness is achieved, some systems now include a second tower which provides longer retention time between the second displacement with chlorine dioxide and the final wash .... 1, record 39, English, - atmospheric%20diffusion%20washer
