"Exemption quantity" means (a) in respect of a radioactive nuclear substance set out in column 1 of the schedule, the corresponding quantity set out in column 2 of the schedule; (b) in respect of a radioactive nuclear substance that is not set out in column 1 of the schedule, (i) 10 kBq, where the atomic number of the substance is equal to or less than 81, (ii) 10 kBq, where the atomic number of the substance is greater than 81 and the substance, or its short-lived radioactive progeny, does not emit alpha radiation, and (iii) 500 Bq, where the atomic number of the substance is greater than 81 and the substance or its short-lived radioactive progeny emits alpha radiation; and (c) in respect of more than one radioactive nuclear substance, any combined quantity of those substances in which the sum of the quotients obtained by dividing the quantity of each substance by its corresponding exemption quantity, as referred to in paragraphs (a) and (b), is equal to one.

Detection of radioactive substances separated by chromatographic means has always been possible by standard counting devices with thin-layer chromatography and with extruded columns. Small scintillators are placed in contact with the column effluent, as radiation is emitted by the solutes these are detected by the scintillators and the light pulses from the scintillators are detected by a photomultiplier, amplified and recorded.

Ce four est porté à 850 °C et les molécules qui arrivent au contact de cet oxyde de cuivre sont décomposées [...] Si l'on veut doser du carbone 14, l'eau est piégée sur un support tel que le silicagel. Seul le CO2 marqué parvient à une chambre de comptage proportionnel. Cette chambre est composée d’une enceinte parfaitement propre traversée en son centre par un filament de tungstène porté à une tension de 1 500 volts en courant continu. Les ions libérés sous l'effet de la radioactivité sont collectés sur la paroi interne de la chambre de comptage et le signal ainsi obtenu est envoyé après intégration à un enregistreur.
