Les acides nucléiques peptidiques(ANP) sont des homologues synthétiques des acides nucléiques, au niveau de leur composition. Cependant, les grandes différences entre ces deux derniers demeurent dans les propriétés physico-chimiques de ces molécules. La colonne dorsale des ANP n’ est pas composée d’une queue de liaisons phosphodiesters, comme c'est le cas pour les acides nucléiques naturels. À la place, ils sont caractérisés par une queue protéique de liaisons peptidiques. En conséquence, la queue est d’une charge nette neutre et est dépourvue de carbones chiraux. Comme la queue polypeptidique d’un ANP n’ est pas chargée de façon électronégative, il n’ y a pas de répulsion électrostatique entre les deux brins d’un duplex.
