Actinide co-conversion is a key step, between fuel reprocessing, and refabrication. Radiation damage in solids … Because the particles … have different energies and different ranges, the distance from the site of formation to the region where they cause damage is different. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself (also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. To this end a distinction is made between a microdispersed and a macrodispersed fuel. A fuel is called microdispersed if the size of the fissile inclusions is less than 10 [micrometers], and otherwise is called macrodispersed. Microdispersed fuels can be produced either by infiltration or by compression of a mixture of matrix grains and fissile grains, while macrodispersed fuels can be produced by compression only. Significant temperature gradients are present across the fuel particles when a nuclear reactor is producing power. If local temperatures are sufficiently high, nuclear fuel kernels can migrate up the thermal gradient. During this process, the barrier retaining fission product is progressively damaged, and the damage can lead to complete failure of the coating system. There are two sub-types: pure suspension and cyclonic. Pure suspension units are true "burners" in that a stable open flame (similar to a gas or oil burner flame) is created by air jets that are usually mounted in the wall of the combustor or boiler. Cyclonic suspension units have a refractory cylindrical combustion chamber into which the fuel particles and air are introduced tangentially. The long cyclonic gas circulation keeps the fuel circulating in the chamber, resulting in complete combustion of the fuel, but all ash normally exits with the hot exhaust gases. Il en existe deux types : les chaudières à suspension intégrale et les chaudières cyclones. Les premières sont de vrais brûleurs du fait qu'elles créent une flamme nue stable(semblable à celle d’un brûleur à gaz ou au mazout) avivée par des jets d’air habituellement montés sur la paroi de la chaudière. Les chaudières à cyclone sont pourvues d’une chambre de combustion cylindrique en matière réfractaire, dans laquelle les particules combustibles et l'air sont introduits tangentiellement. La longue période de circulation cyclonique des gaz dans la chambre assure la combustion complète mais, normalement, toutes les cendres sont évacuées avec les gaz de combustion chauds.
