The oxygen sensor (also known as an O2 sensor, lambda sensor, or EGO sensor) is one of the most critical sensors on a fuel-injected engine. It resembles a spark plug and is located in the exhaust manifold between the turbo and catalytic converter. When at operating temperature it becomes a miniature battery which generates a voltage based on the differential between the oxygen content of the exhaust gas and the oxygen content of the ambient air. By this method it measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream, allowing the ECM to compensate to some degree for various fuel grades, engine wear, altitude changes, usage of oxygenated fuel, and more. Another big benefit is the ability to keep emissions of carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and unburned hydrocarbons as low as possible. 3, record 4, English, - oxygen%20sensor

Hypersonic propulsion. Color Enhanced Supersonic Hydrogen Flame Through funding from the Hyper-X Program Office at NASA Langley, an experimental study of a dual-mode scramjet combustor is being conducted at the Aerospace Research Laboratory of the University of Virginia. Using conventional instrumentation and multiple laser-based diagnostic techniques, the study aims to further the understanding of the fuel-air mixing and combustion processes within the combustor and to resolve the uncertainty in CFD predictions of such flows. The majority of the experiments are being conducted using a high-enthalpy, continuous-flow facility. This facility simulates Mach 5 flight of a scramjet operating with ramp fuel injection of hydrogen. NASA Langley is performing numerical modeling of the combustor and these results are being compared with the experimental measurements. 2, record 19, English, - hypersonic%20propulsion

2, record 19, French, - propulsion%20hypersonique

Direct injection (DI) refers to fuel injected directly into the combustion chamber above the piston. Direct injection has long been used on large diesel engines. Smaller diesels are increasingly adopting direct injection (vs. indirect injection into a pre-chamber). Direct injection also can be used in spark ignition (generally gasoline) engines instead of port fuel injection - for cleaner emissions, increased full throttle power and potentially for lean-burn operation. 4, record 26, English, - direct%20injection%20engine

Net calorific value (NCV) is the number of heat units obtained by the complete combustion of a unit mass (for solids and liquids) or a unit volume (for gases); it is assumed that the make-up fuel and the agent of combustion are at atmospheric pressure and 25 ° C, that the combustion products are brought to the same pressure and temperature and that the water of combustion is present at steam. 1, record 39, English, - agent%20of%20combustion

The TRI60 demonstrated start-up and acceleration to cruise thrust in less than five seconds entirely by means of the windmilling effect created by ram pressure. At launch, the only engine-starting actions required are the opening of the fuel cock and the firing of two pyrotechnic igniters in the combustion chamber. 1, record 41, English, - pyrotechnic%20igniter

The all new CVH (Compound Valve Hemi-Head) H-cylinder engine was designed specifically to squeeze the most power possible from every precious drop of fuel. By wing a hemispherical (half-round) head, and dishing out the top of the pistons, the fuel/air mixture is literally gathered in the center of the chamber and thoroughly mixed. 1, record 42, English, - compound%20valve%20hemi%2Dhead

1, record 42, French, - culasse%20h%C3%A9misph%C3%A9rique%20%C3%A0%20soupapes%20oppos%C3%A9es
