Four experiments studied the plasma environment. The magnetometer (MAG) measured the local magnetic field to determine the influence of the comet on the magnetized solar wind. JPA also studied this interaction by recording fluxes and velocity distributions for low to medium energy ions. A 600 000 km du noyau, des instruments ont détecté les premiers ions cométaires. Entre 18 000 et 15 000 km, un front de choc, plus important que prévu pour une si petite comète, a été observé par certains instruments. Les mesures du magnétomètre ne confirmèrent pas la découverte lors de l'approche de la comète, en la quittant, en revanche, ils détectèrent clairement un choc.
