The first on-machine coating was carried out using equipment adapted from the size press. In the Massey print roll coater ... the color is supplied by a series of metering or transfer rolls that smooth out the coating color and spread it evenly by the time it reaches the two large applicator rolls. Le premier équipement à avoir été utilisé pour le couchage sur machine est la coucheuse à rouleaux Massey [...] La sauce de couchage est étalée entre deux gros rouleaux applicateurs(diamètre de 1, 2 m), formant une pince analogue à celle d’une presse encolleuse verticale. On alimente la pince en sauce de couchage par l'intermédiaire d’une série de rouleaux doseurs(rouleaux de transfert), ce qui permet d’aplanir le film et d’enduire régulièrement les rouleaux applicateurs. On fait d’ordinaire osciller un ou plusieurs rouleaux doseurs.
