Subject field(s)
  • Foundation Waterproofing
  • Sewers and Drainage
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
CONT

Geomembranes are used in a variety of geotechnical structures where leakage is critical ... waterproofing alone does not prevent leakage; waterproofing plus drainage is necessary; and synthetic drainage layers provide an effective solution to the problem of geomembrane associated drainage ... Synthetic drainage layers are made of planar materials thick enough to convey fluids in their plane. Available materials include: Needlepunched nonwoven geotextiles ... Mats ... Nets ... Corrugated, waffled or alveolate plates ...

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Dams and Causeways
  • Foundation Engineering
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
DEF

A blanket of pervious material constructed at the foundation from the impervious zone to the landside in a levee or downstream side of an earth dam, to permit the discharge of seepage and to minimize the possibility of piping failure, either of the blowout or subsurface erosion type.

CONT

Normally a granular drainage blanket is provided over the area treated with vertical drains in order to facilitate the dissipation of porewater at ground surface level. As the underlying compressible soil is usually unable to directly support construction plant, the drainage blanket should also function as a foundation platform for the construction plant. It is advisable to use a geotextile sheet beneath the drainage blanket to prevent loss of granular material into the soft deposits or a foundation failure under the load imposed by construction plant.

DEF

CONT

The need for a consolidation drainage blanket decreases rapidly with time because the rate of consolidation settlement decreases rapidly ... In a saturated soil with one-way drainage towards the ground surface, the volume of water expelled is equal to the volume of soil consolidation. [If, for example, it took 848 days to reach 90% consolidation, equal to 900 mm, on a particular site.] The design of consolidation drainage blankets is based on calculating the average consolidation drainage during 1/848 of the time for 90% consolidation, i.e. during the period when the first 3.8% of consolidation occurs.

OBS

consolidation: The process whereby the application of pressure on a soil layer over a period of time causes a reduction in its volume by expelling fluid from the pores and by packing the soil grains closer together. The amount and rate of consolidation are important factors in the computation of settlement of structures and thus their foundation design.

It has been suggested ... that since the thinnest layer of sand to act successfully as an erosion pumping filter was 25 mm, and the slurry penetrated /3mm in this case, then a geotextile with a thickness of 10 mm or more might successfully replace the sand blanket layer. The fact that the most successful sand blanket have voids ranging from 5 to 30 [micrometers] seems to suggest that the geotextile's voids should be of a similar magnitude. Erosion pumping filters, using a geotextile in conjunction with a sand blanket, are much more effective than geotextiles alone.

OBS

Horizontal drainage blanket: A blanket of pervious material constructed at the foundation from the impervious zone to the landside in a levee or downstream side of an earth dam, to permit the discharge of seepage and to minimize the possibility of piping failure, either of the blowout or subsurface erosion type.

CONT

Transmissivity of a drainage net as a function of hydraulic gradient and compressive stresses: (a) the net is between two geomembranes; (b) the net is between a geomembrane and a heat-bonded non-woven geotextile ... .

OBS

The term fin drain is given to this form of composite geotextile drain because the water conducting sheet is generally in the form of a fin projecting upwards from a pipe. The fin drain sheet itself is formed from a water conducting core backed with a geotextile filter on either one or both sides. Geotextile mats, nets, and waffled plastic sheets (sometimes called geospacers) may be used as the core material ... .

OBS

Geotextile nets consist of two sets of roughly round polymer strands that cross at a constant angle to give very open geotextile with large diamond or rectangle shaped apertures. This mesh-like appearance led to the term "mesh" being initially applied to this type of geotextile before the industry standardized on the term "net". ... This form of geotextile is mainly used as either comparatively low strength soil reinforcement or as the core material in a fin drain geotextile composite ... .
