Plasma arc cutting (PAC) can be defined as an electric arc cutting process that severs or cuts metal by melting a localized area with a constricted arc that removes the molten material with a high-velocity jet of extremely hot, ionized gas emerging from the constricting orifice in the torch.

El proceso de grabado de plasma en seco reemplaza el método de baño de ácido y película (conocido como procesamiento "húmedo") que se utiliza para crear un diseño en una oblea. El método de plasma en seco lanza iones calientes a través de una máscara directamente en la plaqueta o microcircuito, que evaporan la capa de dióxido de silicón.

Soudage et coupage sous l'eau. Dès le début du siècle, des travaux de coupage ont été entrepris dans l'eau. On utilisait à cette époque la flamme oxyacétylénique jusqu'à des profondeurs de l'ordre de 10 m. Au-delà, l'acétylène ne pouvant être emmagasiné à une pression suffisante pour vaincre la pression exercée par l'eau, on eut recours à la flamme oxhydrique(cette dernière est encore employée, mais de plus en plus rarement). Puis on étudia le comportement de l'arc électrique dans ce milieu et on utilise maintenant ce procédé, non seulement pour couper, mais aussi pour souder. La flamme oxypropane a également des applications.
