Soudage et coupage sous l'eau. Dès le début du siècle, des travaux de coupage ont été entrepris dans l'eau. On utilisait à cette époque la flamme oxyacétylénique jusqu'à des profondeurs de l'ordre de 10 m. Au-delà, l'acétylène ne pouvant être emmagasiné à une pression suffisante pour vaincre la pression exercée par l'eau, on eut recours à la flamme oxhydrique(cette dernière est encore employée, mais de plus en plus rarement). Puis on étudia le comportement de l'arc électrique dans ce milieu et on utilise maintenant ce procédé, non seulement pour couper, mais aussi pour souder.
