A hollow vertical tube, rod, or pipe terminating in a perforated pointed shoe and fitted with a fine-mesh wire screen; connected with others in parallel to a drainage pump; driven into or beside an excavation to remove underground water, to lower the water level and thereby minimize flooding during construction, or to improve stability.

Tube métallique muni à son extrémité d’un filtre en forme de pointe et utilisé par fonçage dans le sol pour exécuter un rabattement de nappe.

Le fond de fouille est au-dessous du niveau de la nappe [...] on procède à un rabattement de nappe par pompage, en principe à l’extérieur de la fouille. Suivant la perméabilité du sol et la hauteur de rabattement, on dispose un réseau de pointes filtrantes, qui sont des tubes d’acier crépinés foncés par battage et reliés en tête à un collecteur sur lequel est montée une pompe de surface. La hauteur d’aspiration est limitée pratiquement à 7 ou 8,00 m.

Dans le cas où la hauteur de pompage est plus importante, on a recours à des puits filtrants équipés chacun d’une pompe immergée dont la hauteur de refoulement n’est plus limitée.

Selon les sources consultées, «puits filtrant» est soit synonyme de «pointe filtrante», soit qu'il s’en distingue de par ses dimensions et par le fait de comporter une pompe immergée; selon d’autres, il ne désigne plus un tube métallique mais un trou foré(puits) terminé en sa partie inférieure par une crépine; pour ajouter à la confusion, «pointe filtrante» peut ne désigner que la partie inférieure d’un puits foncé.
