elevation: the term is used synonymously with altitude in referring to distance above sea level, but in modern surveying practice the term "elevation" is preferred to indicate heights on the Earth's surface whereas "altitude" is used to indicate the heights of points in space above the Earth's surface.

Après l'épisode des chutes de neige importantes du week-end dernier, le froid et un fort vent du NE ont contribué à une forte instabilité du manteau neigeux. Le risque d’avalanche est compris entre 3 et 4(sur une échelle comportant 5 niveaux de risque), selon l'altitude et les régions des Alpes du nord. La plus grande prudence est donc de mise, surtout lors d’un passage à ski d’une zone peu enneigée(crête soufflée par le vent) à une zone abritée ou sous le vent(forte accumulation de neige).
