This huge chamber—36 m high, 30 m wide—has been used to test the deployment of large space systems and the Mars Pathfinder airbag landing system. It offers low vibration levels, and, when it is outfitted with liquid helium shrouds, it will simulate the thermal environment at the L2 operating location of JWST.

La France a de plus pris une part capitale dans la réalisation des unités de focalisation, en concevant les quadripôles supraconducteurs principaux du LHC [Large Hadron Collider] et leur assemblage dans leurs masses froides. Les 392 aimants quadripôles, désormais tous dans le tunnel, garantiront la focalisation des faisceaux, c'est-à-dire la maîtrise de leur dimension millimétrique tout au long de leur trajectoire. Ces aimants sont insérés dans des enceintes à hélium liquide avec des aimants correcteurs ainsi que bien d’autres composants. Cet assemblage complexe, appelé masse froide, est lui-même entouré par un cryostat et un module d’asservissement. Le tout forme ce que l'on appelle une section droite courte.

A vessel having double walls, the space between being evacuated to prevent the transfer of heat and the surfaces facing the vacuum being heat-reflective; used to hold liquid gases and to study low-temperature phenomena.

The cryogenic Dewar vessel is a flask-in-flask reservoir. The interwall space is filled with multilayer insulation and evacuated. High vacuum is maintained for a long time, which secures stable technical data throughout the whole operation period. The inner and outer vessels are made of aluminium alloy.

Pour pouvoir remplir le cryostat d’hélium liquide, sans utiliser beaucoup d’hélium, il faut d’abord prérefroidir les 2 réservoirs avec de l'azote liquide afin d’abaisser la température du cryostat à 77 °K. Après avoir attendu que tout l'intérieur du cryostat se soit thermalisé à cette température, on chasse l'azote en envoyant de l'air sous pression dans les réservoirs. [Puis], on pompe le gaz [...] à l'intérieur des réservoirs afin d’éviter qu'il ne gèle lors du transfert d’hélium liquide. [...] Une fois que le vide est fait, on fait rentrer de l'hélium gazeux puis on siphonne doucement. Comme le siphonnage d’hélium se fait par le bas du cryostat, des vapeurs froides d’hélium vont d’abord refroidir la bobine et le réservoir. [...] Le réservoir est donc amené à une température de 4, 2 °K, ce qui est la température de l'hélium liquide.

The superfluid liquid helium cryostat is based on ISO technology, providing temperatures down to 1.7 K for the payload.

The FIRST [Far InfraRed and Submillimetre Telescope] payload is housed inside the cryostat, which contains 2560 l of superfluid helium at 1.65 K, giving a predicted cryostat lifetime of 4.5 years in the L2 orbit.
