Il s’applique spécialement à la bande de cuir passée sur l'épaule droite, à laquelle les arbalétriers du Moyen Âge accrochaient leur arme, et qui, plus tard, suspendant l'épée sur le flanc gauche. Au XVIIIe s., le baudrier, portant le sabre, se croisait avec la bandoulière supportant la giberne. De 1915 à 1940, il servit à soutenir le ceinturon des officiers en tenue de campagne.
