L'alcootest, qui désigne à la fois l'appareil servant à vérifier l'alcoolémie et le test lui-même, est utilisé par les policiers afin de déterminer le taux d’alcool dans le sang chez le conducteur dont la capacité de conduire est mise en doute. Au poste de police, c'est un policier, technicien qualifié, qui administre ce test en prélevant un échantillon d’haleine. Pour que le test soit valable, les policiers doivent prélever au moins deux échantillons d’haleine en respectant un délai minimal de 15 minutes entre chaque échantillon.
