Scuttling is the deliberate sinking of a ship by allowing water to flow into the hull. This can be achieved in several ways—seacocks or hatches can be opened to the sea, or holes may be ripped into the hull with brute force or with explosives. Scuttling may be performed to dispose of an abandoned, old, or captured vessel; to prevent the vessel from becoming a navigation hazard; as an act of self-destruction to prevent the ship from being captured by an enemy force (or, in the case of a vessel engaged in illegal activities, by the authorities); as a blockship to restrict navigation through a channel or within a harbor; to provide an artificial reef for divers and marine life; or to alter the flow of rivers. 2, record 17, English, - scuttling

Waterspouts form over (or move across) the coastal waters or intracoastal waters ... They are treated as tornadoes over water. There are two type of waterspouts: "fair weather" and "tornadic". Fair weather waterspouts are usually weaker, move slowly, and may not be associated with a thunderstorm. Tornadic waterspouts form within developing thunderstorms, or severe thunderstorms, and move much faster while being more intense. 4, record 37, English, - fair%20weather%20waterspout

The most common type of waterspout is a fairweather waterspout, which arises over warm seas, e.g. near Florida. It lasts for only a few minutes. These waterspouts are generally of F0 intensity, with winds of no more than 30 m/s. They typically occur during the developing stage of an airmass thunderstorm, below the main updraft. These thunderstorms are found in weakly sheared environments, so the spin-up must result mainly from vortex stretching and less from vortex tilting. 2, record 37, English, - fair%20weather%20waterspout

1, record 37, French, - trombe%20marine

Horse latitudes, two belts of latitude where winds are light and the weather is hot and dry. They are located mostly over the oceans, at about 30° lat. in each hemisphere, and have a north-south range of about 5° as they follow the seasonal migration of the sun. The horse latitudes are associated with the subtropical anticyclone and the large-scale descent of air from high-altitude currents moving toward the poles. After reaching the earth's surface, this air spreads toward the equator as part of the prevailing trade winds or toward the poles as part of the westerlies. 3, record 40, English, - horse%20latitude

The term horse latitudes supposedly originates from the days when Spanish sailing vessels transported horses to the West Indies. Ships would often become becalmed in mid-ocean in this latitude, thus severely prolonging the voyage; the resulting water shortages would make it necessary for crews to throw their horses overboard. 3, record 40, English, - horse%20latitude

2, record 46, French, - quadripode

[In a restricted marine environment] If the climate is arid, evaporation exceeds inflow, and the water becomes hypersaline. ... Under conditions of aridity, the restricted sea has adjacent lands with little or no stream action other than torrential episodes which may occasionally wash in detrital material. The sea may attain high temperatures, with excessive evaporation, and development of salinity greater than that of the open sea. Excessive evaporation produces a lowering of water level, and induces a permanent inflowing current of normal sea water across, or through, the restricting barriers. ... If it were not for the continued inflow current, the history of restricted seas in arid climates would be short. The water would completely evaporate, leaving behind a relatively thin coating of saline residue. Maintenance of inflow from the open sea provides a continuous supply of dissolved salts, and a balance is reached between evaporation and inflow for given conditions. Inevitably, the concentration of salts within the restricted area is increased and may reach the saturation point for some. 2, record 57, English, - restricted%20arid%20environment

1, record 57, French, - environnement%20restreint%20aride
