A ghost forest is the watery remains of a once verdant woodland. As sea level rises, more and more saltwater encroaches on the land. Along the world's coasts and estuaries, invading seawater advances and overtakes the fresh water that deciduous trees rely upon for sustenance. The salty water slowly poisons living trees, leaving a haunted ghost forest of dead and dying timber. Still standing in or near brackish water, the decaying trees of a ghost forest resemble giant graying pillars that protrude into the air. 2, record 17, English, - ghost%20forest

3, record 23, French, - lest

The Canadian Geodetic Survey provides the fundamental reference frame and standards for the measurement of latitude, longitude, elevation and gravity anywhere in Canada and monitors motions of [the] continental landmass in support of geomatics and geoscience. This geospatial reference frame underpins all activities where positions matter, enabling mapping, land surveying, water management and engineering activities in Canada. A growing community of research scientists rely on the program's precise positioning and gravity information to study changes in the Earth. The program is delivered by real-time analysis of global satellite data, supporting client services that enable Canadians to use global navigation satellite systems (e.g. GPS) for precise positioning, including heights above sea-level. 2, record 48, English, - Canadian%20Geodetic%20Survey%3A%20Spatially%20Enabling%20Canada

2, record 48, French, - Lev%C3%A9s%20g%C3%A9od%C3%A9siques%20du%20Canada%C2%A0%3A%20Le%20Canada%20%C3%A0%20r%C3%A9f%C3%A9rence%20spatiale

The direct radiative effects of trace gases in the atmosphere are primarily due to their absorption in the infrared part of the spectrum. Most effective in this regard are gases with absorption in the parts of the spectrum where water vapour and CO2 are almost transparent (8-13 [micrometers]), the atmospheric window. If absorption bands for different gases overlap, the effects of a changing concentration on the radiative transfer are reduced. Gases with no change in their abundance do not directly contribute to a climatic change, but may affect the magnitude of the role of other constituents due to such overlapping of absorption bands. 3, record 71, English, - direct%20radiative%20effect

3, record 73, French, - eau%20profonde%20de%20l%27Atlantique%20Nord

The oceans are mostly composed of warm salty water near the surface over cold, less salty water in the ocean depths. These two regions don't mix except in certain special areas. The ocean currents, the movement of the ocean in the surface layer, are driven mostly by the wind. In certain areas near the polar oceans, the colder surface water also gets saltier due to evaporation or sea ice formation. In these regions, the surface water becomes dense enough to sink to the ocean depths. This pumping of surface water into the deep ocean forces the deep water to move horizontally until it can find an area on the world where it can rise back to the surface and close the current loop. This usually occurs in the equatorial ocean, mostly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This very large, slow current is called the thermohaline circulation because it is caused by temperature and salinity (haline) variations. 2, record 74, English, - deep%20water
