A permanent thermocline exists beneath the stream sloping upward from the right to the left side of the current. This thermocline separates the warm water of the Gulf Stream from the cold slope water and the boundary is often referred to as the cold wall or north wall. The north wall makes it easy to identify the position of the Gulf Stream in satellite infrared images by observing the strong sea surface temperature gradient. 2, record 1, English, - cold%20wall

Ballast water exchange is the process of discharging ballast water at sea, and filling ballast tanks with oceanic saline water in an effort to reduce the abundance of harmful coastal and/or freshwater species in ballast tanks. 2, record 5, French, - r%C3%A9troaction%20climat%2Dcycle%20du%20carbone

Deep ocean storage includes direct injection of liquid carbon dioxide into the water column at intermediate depths (1000-3000 m), or at depths greater than 3000 m, where liquid CO2 becomes heavier than sea water, so it would drop to the ocean bottom and form a so-called "CO2 lake." 3, record 6, English, - ocean%20storage

1, record 9, French, - immersion%20%C3%A0%20grande%20profondeur%20dans%20les%20oc%C3%A9ans

Ocean sequestration. The ocean represents a large potential sink for sequestration of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Although the long-term effectiveness and potential side effects of using the oceans in this way are unknown, two methods of enhancing sequestration have been proposed: the direct injection of a relatively pure CO2 stream that has been generated, for example, at a power plant or from an industrial process; the enhancement of the net oceanic uptake from the atmosphere, for example, through iron fertilization. 2, record 14, English, - ocean%20sequestration

Not to be confused with "ocean storage." The term "ocean storage" refers to the injection of CO2 into the ocean while "ocean sequestration" includes the injection of CO2 as well as other methods for enhancing the ocean's CO2 uptake. The main principles of wind-driven ocean circulation are as follows. 1. Wind stress causes transport of water in a thin Ekman surface layer. 2. If there is a curl to the wind stress, the Ekman layer transport will converge or diverge, causing downwelling or upwelling. 3. The downwelling or upwelling motions cause fluid columns to squash or stretch vertically, and this causes slow southward or northward flow due to conservation of potential vorticity. 4. The southward or northward flow is determined by the Sverdrup relationship, which links the N-S transport of water with the curl of the wind stress. In order to conserve mass, the water returns to its original position via a relatively thin boundary layer adjacent to the western edge of the basin. 3, record 15, English, - wind%2Ddriven%20oceanic%20circulation
