Agricultural activities ... can have a major impact on aquatic ecosystems, causing soil erosion, eutrophication, and contamination of the water (surface and subsurface) and sediments as a result of farmland leaching, runoff, and percolation. The intensity of agricultural activities in the St. Lawrence Lowlands therefore contributes to the deteriorating quality of the surface water in the river and its tributaries. 2, record 1, English, - agricultural%20leaching

2, record 1, French, - lessivage%20agricole

Capillary Rise of Ground Moisture: Moisture travels upward by capillary action --as much as 14 to 18 gallons per day have been noted under a 1,000 square-foot house-- and evaporates within the crawl space. Capillary rise occurs in nearly all areas where the soil is clay or silt. Capillary action is the effect of surface tension that causes water to rise up a narrow tube, against the effect of gravity. In building construction, capillary action can occur between two surfaces placed together, or within porous materials. This relates to the installation of wood flooring in that moisture can be drawn through both the subfloor and the concrete below it. 4, record 2, English, - capillary%20rise%20of%20soil%20moisture

1, record 7, French, - transfert%20d%27eau%20liquide

Water Potential is defined as the potential energy of water per unit mass of water in the system. The total water potential of a sample is the sum of four component potentials: gravitational, matric, osmotic, and pressure. Gravitational potential depends on the position of the water in a gravitational field. Matric potential depends on the adsorptive forces binding water to a matrix. Osmotic potential depends on the concentration of dissolved substance in the water. Pressure potential depends on the hydrostatic or pneumatic pressure on the water. 3, record 8, English, - total%20water%20potential

A related problem is viscous fingering, observed most conveniently at the interface of two liquids between two glass plates. For two miscible liquids, like gelatin and water, a DLA- like structure appears when one liquid invades the other .... This growth process is the result of a hydrodynamic instability between the liquids. As in DLA, any small "bump" on the interface will tend to grow predominantly at the tips because the pressure gradient, which drives the growth, is largest at the tips. 2, record 16, English, - viscous%20fingering

Erosion control Mattress ... the placement of revetment mats on slopes to be protected is one of the methods of erosion control .... The mattress generally consist of double layers of woven fabric forms placed on the slope to be protected and filled with concrete or grout .... this type of forming system is a simple, fast, and economical technique for the placement of concrete for slope protection both above and below the water without the need for dewatering .... For normal installations, the fabric forms, prefabricated to job specifications and dimensions, are simply spread over the terrain, which has received minimal grading. The fabric form is then pumped full of mortar .... This same concept can be used where slide problems are caused by eroding of the toe of the slopes, and where access is difficult for placement of rip-rap. 1, record 19, English, - erosion%20control%20mattress

Fabric Liners for Erosion Control Systems ... In most situations where continuous flowing water is involved fabric protection of the underlying soil in itself is not sufficient.
