There is an alternative between closed- and open-loop systems called standing column wells (SCWs). In a SCW, groundwater is pumped from the base of a deep well and directed to a heat exchanger. ... A SCW consists of a long borehole mostly drilled in the bedrock and filled with groundwater ... Typical installations use a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe almost as long as the well within which a submersible pump is installed. In a conventional SCW, groundwater is pumped at the bottom of the well through a PVC pipe and returned below the dynamic level in the annular space of the borehole via a rejection pipe. ... Before reinjecting the groundwater into the SCW, part of the flow rate can be diverted into a separate injection well. This process is called "bleed" and improves the system performance by attracting water from the undisturbed neighbouring ground through aquifer fractures. The bleed induces heat transfer by advection ..., which improves significantly the thermal efficiency of the SCW. 2, record 1, English, - standing%20column%20well

3, record 1, French, - puits%20%C3%A0%20colonne%20permanente

Flash steam plants are a common type of geothermal power plant in operation ... Fluids at temperatures greater than 182 °C/360 °F, pumped from deep underground, travel under high pressures to a low-pressure tank at the earth's surface. The change in pressure causes some of the fluid to rapidly transform, or "flash," into vapor. The vapor then drives a turbine, which drives a generator. 2, record 3, English, - flash%20steam%20geothermal%20power%20plant

Less visible on the modern landscape is production [of salt] by evaporation of brine in pots over fires, a technique that leaves "briquetage." This is a term that archaeologists use worldwide to describe the broken pots used for evaporating brine over fires. ... At Sacapulas, brine collected from a spring is poured through salty soil in large containers with holes in the bottom to enrich the salt content of the brine. The enriched brine is then poured into a couple of dozen open bowls elevated above a slow fire on a table inside a building. By continuously pouring brine into the bowls, the water slowly evaporates, and loose salt fills the bowls; the salt is then transferred into a large jar. Sometimes salt is further heated to form solid cakes, in which case the bowls must be broken to extract the salt cakes. 3, record 8, English, - salt%20cake

2, record 14, French, - r%C3%A9troaction%20climat%2Dcycle%20du%20carbone

An ex-vessel steam explosion may occur if the primary system is breached by hot debris. Debris in the reactor outlet piping may fail the piping and fall onto the pump room floor or debris on the reactor vessel bottom may be blocked from flowing into the outlet piping if it freezes in the effluent piping nozzle muff structure. If this occurs, the debris will heat up on the reactor vessel bottom and eventually fail the bottom shield. The likely mode of failure of the bottom shield is collapse of the shield as a whole. If it collapses, the entire shield, as well as the molten debris, will fall into the pin room below the reactor vessel. The debris will then flow across the floor into the pump room. In either event, a large portion of the reactor fuel inventory will be deposited on the pump room floor. The pump room floor will be covered with water in many scenarios. A steam explosion may result when the debris enters this water.

Combustion Override Split Production Horizontal Well Process (COSH). The main feature of this process, developed by the Alberta Research Council (ARC), is implementation of gravity drainage using a basal horizontal well in a combustion process. The configuration of different wells is critical to the operation of this process. A linear configuration of vertical air injection wells is drilled and completed in the upper portion of the reservoir. A horizontal oil production well is completed in the bottom of the reservoir, aligned and positioned beneath the vertical injection wells. The reservoir is prepared for ignition and combustion is initiated at each of the injection wells. A hot fluid-transmissive chamber is formed around each of the injection wells as combustion proceeds. Combustion gas communication is established with the gas production wells. Heated oil and water, produced by the combustion front in each hot chamber, drains under the effect of gravity and is brought to the surface through the horizontal production well. 3, record 35, English, - combustion%20override%20split%20production%20horizontal%20well%20process

2, record 37, French, - g%C3%A9othermie%20profonde

Free products and dissolved petroleum components from the surface of the contaminated aquifer are captured and treated via multi-phase extraction & treatment. Bioslurping induces a horizontal vacuum gradient on the targeted monitor/recovery wells through a slurp tube which is inserted into each well. Product and groundwater are entrained in droplet form in a high velocity air stream and brought to the surface for treatment. Following air/liquid separation the liquid phase is treated by a combination of oil/water separation, air stripping, and liquid phase carbon treatment before being discharged. The off-gas is treated (if necessary) by vapour phase carbon treatment. The advantages of multi-phase extraction & treatment include: a high product to groundwater extraction ratio; aeration of the vadose zone which enhances natural biodegradation of the hydrocarbon contaminants; all treatment components may be housed in a turn-key mobile remedial unit; a simple product recovery technology which can be transferred to conventional remedial applications such as pump and treat, sparging and vapour extraction system (VES) applications. Air sparging is the process of injecting air directly into groundwater. Air sparging remediates groundwater by volatilizing contaminants and enhancing biodegradation. It is akin to blowing bubbles from a straw into a bowl of water. As the bubbles rise, the contaminants are removed from the groundwater by physical contact with the air (i.e., stripping) and are carried up into the unsaturated zone (i.e., soil). As the contaminants move into the soil, a soil vapor extraction system is usually used to remove vapors. 2, record 55, English, - air%20sparging

Figure 6.1 illustrates a typical open disposal trench at the Barnwell facility. The trench floor is sloped slightly and covered with a layer of sand to facilitate collection of percolating water in a French drain. A number of pipes allow any water that may collect in the French drain to be removed and analyzed. Presently waste, primarily in boxes, drums and cask liners, is stacked neatly in the trench ... As the level of the waste reaches the design level, 2 m below grade, a layer of dry soil is added and allowed to filter down between the waste containers. When a trench is filled, it is covered with a cap of at least 0.6 m of compacted native clay, followed by at least 0.9 m of soil. The cap is graded to shed water and seeded with grass. The sump in each trench is monitored for at least 5 years and any subsidence in the cap is filled to maintain its water-shedding ability. Monitoring wells at the perimeter of the facility have not detected migration of nuclides after more than 15 years of operation. 4, record 69, English, - monitoring%20well

Proration is an accounting system where the total actual monthly battery production is equitably distributed among wells in the battery. This system is applicable when the production of wells producing to a battery is commingled before separation and measurement, and each well's monthly production is initially estimated, based on the well test data ... In the case of an oil proration battery, the oil, gas, and water produced by individual wells is not continuously measured. Instead, the wells are periodically tested to determine the production rates of oil, gas and water. The rates determined during the well test are used to estimate the well's production for the time period beginning with the well test and continuing until another test is conducted. The estimated monthly production so determined for each well is totaled to arrive at the battery's total monthly estimated production. 2, record 74, English, - proration%20battery

Technology Canada partnerships investment promotes sustainable development in deep oil sands extraction. ... The project involves developing a water recycling technology that will remove environmental and economic barriers to heavy oil production using the steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) system. With SAGD, steam injected into the formation from a horizontal well decreases the viscosity of the heavy oil and allows it to flow to a second parallel well where it is piped to the surface.

4, record 76, French, - drainage%20par%20gravit%C3%A9%20au%20moyen%20de%20vapeur

The bucket pump is similar to the rag pump and lift disk pump but does not require a tube to draw the water up. It is not very common anymore, but can still be found occasionally. One advantage of this pump is that the buckets don't turn upright until they are well below the surface of the water. They fill with clean water, and bring up less of the scum that often floats on the surface of a well. Large old sailing ships sometimes used bucket pumps. They were also used on farms and many other places. Of course, the length of the chain and the number of buckets can vary greatly. 3, record 81, English, - bucket%20pump

... groundwater pumping will continue to be conducted in an environmentally conservative manner as was done during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 runoff years until there has been a substantial recovery in soil moisture and water table conditions in areas of Types B, C, and D vegetation that have been affected by groundwater pumping. The Standing Committee will establish annual pumping programs based on an evaluation of current conditions, including soil moisture level, water table depth, degree of water table recovery, soil type, vegetation conditions, the results of studies pertaining to vegetation recovery, and compliance with the goals of the Agreement. 5, record 88, English, - recovery

The plant communities that we monitor require periodic connection to the groundwater for long-term survival and recovery from drought. Unfortunately, the on/off status often is not an accurate indicator of whether groundwater is reaching the plant root zone, but the rise of water above the water table due to capillarity is detected easily by the monitoring. Using the soil water and groundwater data, we determine which monitoring sites are connected with the water table and which still need water table recovery. 6, record 88, English, - recovery

Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. Pipe sections are then attached to the surge-block to lower it into the well, above the well screen, and about 15 feet below the water level. The assembly is then repeatedly lifted up and down. The up and down action of the surge-block creates suction and compression strokes that force water in and out of the well through the screened interval, gravel pack, and aquifer. It works like a plunger in the way that it removes small obstructions and sediments from the well. The surge-block is slowly lowered each time resistance begins to decrease. 2, record 89, English, - surge%20block

Building Related Illness (BRI) ... refers to a defined illness with a known causative agent resulting from exposure to the building air. While the causative agent can be chemical (e.g., formaldehyde), it is often biological. Typical sources of biological contaminants are humidification systems, cooling towers, drain pans or filters, other wet surfaces, or water damaged building material. Symptoms may be specific or mimic symptoms commonly associated with the flu, including fever, chills, and cough. Serious lung and respiratory conditions can occur. Legionnaires' disease, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and humidifier fever are common examples of building related illness. 7, record 96, English, - building%2Drelated%20illness

BRI; Building-Related Illness: This term is used when symptoms of a disease from several occupants of a building can be directly linked to specific airborne contaminants in that building. This differs from SBS [sick building syndrome] because with SBS no specific illness or cause can be identified. 8, record 96, English, - building%2Drelated%20illness
