Pumped storage hydro (PSH) involves two reservoirs at different elevations. During periods of low energy demand on the electricity network, surplus electricity is used to pump water to the higher reservoir. When electricity demand increases, the stored water is released, generating electricity. 5, record 1, English, - pumped%20storage%20hydropower

1, record 1, French, - %C3%A9nergie%20hydro%C3%A9lectrique%20par%20pompage

... the backdown procedure ... has greatly contributed to the reduction of bycatch of small cetaceans in purse seine fisheries[. It] is [also] effective when combined with the use of dolphin-safe techniques or rescue methods. ... The backdown occurs after the majority of the net is on board. At this point[,] net retrieval is stopped, the net is tied to the vessel[,] and the engine is put into reverse. This creates a water current that causes the remaining net to form a long channel in the water. The water current pulls the end of the channel underwater, thereby providing an area for dolphins to escape. 1, record 3, English, - backdown%20procedure

3, record 5, French, - eau%20profonde%20de%20l%27Atlantique%20Nord

Capillary Rise of Ground Moisture: Moisture travels upward by capillary action --as much as 14 to 18 gallons per day have been noted under a 1,000 square-foot house-- and evaporates within the crawl space. Capillary rise occurs in nearly all areas where the soil is clay or silt. Capillary action is the effect of surface tension that causes water to rise up a narrow tube, against the effect of gravity. In building construction, capillary action can occur between two surfaces placed together, or within porous materials. This relates to the installation of wood flooring in that moisture can be drawn through both the subfloor and the concrete below it. 4, record 7, English, - capillary%20rise%20of%20soil%20moisture

The Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer MERIS forms part of the core instrument payload of ESA's environmental research satellite ENVISAT-1. MERIS is funded by ESA. The demands of the European scientific community for a global environmental monitoring system, whose technical characteristics enable the extraction of quantitative information from ocean colour data, as well as for documentation of the state and evolution of the atmosphere and land surfaces, led to the conception of MERIS. The oceanographic mission is radiometrically the most demanding in terms of low radiance levels and their associated high signal-to-noise ratios. The instrument will be capable of detecting the low levels of radiation emerging from the ocean (linked to the water constituents by the processes of absorption and scattering), in addition to acquiring information about the atmospheric medium through which the observation is made as well as terrestrial environments. The characteristics of MERIS will also be of great value for the retrieval of information on land surfaces, in particular that of global biomass. 5, record 12, English, - medium%20resolution%20imaging%20spectrometer%20MERIS

Water is applied to crops by surface, subsurface, sprinkler, and drip irrigation ... Subirrigation. Record number: 22, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Subirrigation (seepage) systems are based on establishment and maintenance of the high water table just beneath the crop root zone. Due to the capillary action the water migrates upward providing necessary moisture for the crop. For this system to function, the top layer of soil must have high hydraulic conductivity typical for sand or muck. The existence of natural high water table or restrictive layer (clay, rock, etc.) below the root zone is necessary to allow for the buildup and regulation of the irrigation water table throughout the season. Raising the water table in addition to providing for the evapotranspirational demand of the crop, requires large quantities of water which must also be available for seepage irrigation. 6, record 22, English, - subsurface%20irrigation
