Ground water under sufficient pressure to rise above the level at which the water-bearing bed is tapped in a well.

CONT

Artesian water is ground water confined under pressure between layers of relatively impermeable, underground rock—called a confined aquifer. Artesian water rises to the top of the aquifer and sometimes above land when a well taps the confined aquifer.

CONT

Ground water that rises in wells above the level at which it is first encountered is said to be artesian or "piestic" water.

Une nappe artésienne possède un niveau piézométrique qui se trouve au-dessus du niveau topographique. En d’autres termes, si la nappe était à l’air libre, le niveau d’eau serait supérieur au niveau du sol. Un puits atteignant une nappe artésienne est un puits jaillissant.

Les nappes captives (ou en charge), [sont] formées [...] sous une couche géologique imperméable (ou éponte), le niveau piézométrique pouvant alors être très supérieur au toit de la nappe. Il peut même être supérieur au niveau du sol; on parle alors de nappes artésiennes.
