3, record 11, French, - eau%20profonde%20de%20l%27Atlantique%20Nord

Two types of biological sediment assessment tools, developed by the National Water Research Institute and Ontario Region of Environment Canada, are described: biological guidelines for the assessment of freshwater sediment based on community-based criteria, or the BEnthic Assessment of SedimenT (BEAST) bioassay guidelines based on toxicity scores that compare normal bioassay responses for sediments from reference sites to responses for sediments from sites of concern. These tools are recommended for the assessment of sediment in harbours and embayments for possible remediation, and for assessing sediment removed in navigational or other dredging projects. 1, record 24, English, - Benthic%20Assessment%20of%20Sediment

1, record 24, French, - Benthic%20Assessement%20of%20Sediment

One of the western boundary currents of the North Pacific subtropical gyre. 4, record 25, English, - Kuroshio
Record number: 25, Textual support number: 1 OBS
A deep, narrow, and swift current, it continues from the Philippines Current in a northeastward direction from Taiwan along the continental rise of the East China Sea, through Tokara Strait, and close to the eastern coast of Japan. At 35°N it separates from the coast and flows eastward into the Pacific as a free jet known as the Kuroshio Extension. It forms a marked temperature and salinity front with the Oyashio, which meets the Kuroshio Extension from the north and then flows parallel to it. Like all other western boundary currents, the Kuroshio develops instabilities and sheds eddies. Its unique characteristic is that south of Honshu it switches between three quasi-stable paths across the Izu Ridge at irregular intervals of 18 months to several years. Volume transport in the Kuroshio increases downstream and reaches 57 Sv ... in the Kuroshio Extension, increasing seasonally by 15% during summer. The current's path in the extension is characterized by large meridional excursions in the so-called First and Second Crest at 145° and 152°E. On approaching the Shatsky Rise at 157°E, the Kuroshio Extension divides into several paths that tend to recombine before the Emperor Seamounts near 170°E cause the current to split again and disintegrate. The flow then continues as the North Pacific Current. 4, record 25, English, - Kuroshio

The commercially-available sling pump consists of a helically-wound hose within a drum-shapedbody that has a propeller at the front. A swivel coupling at the front end of the pump allows the body of the pump to rotate freely without affecting the discharge pipe. Water flowing past the propeller at the front of the unit sets the entire body of the pump in a slow rotational motion. Alternating slugs of air and water enter the intake of the spiral hose and are forced along the pipe by the rotational motion of the pump. The sling pump can also be powered by the wind, instead of flowing water. Because the swivel coupling is the only mechanical component comprising the pump, it is virtually maintenance-free. 2, record 31, English, - sling%20pump

2, record 38, French, - basse%20pression%20%C3%A9quatoriale

In the expansive floodplains of the Niger River in Mali farmers have grown rice for many centuries. This peculiar "African rice", or Oryza glaberrima, evolved here before the arrival of humans. Its make-up includes genetic traits essential for survival. Its stalk grows in pace with the rising water, keeping its panicle (seed head) afloat; it can cope with dehydration stress after the waters recede; and it shatters seed when mature. 2, record 39, English, - floating%20rice

1, record 51, French, - sens%20de%20la%20remont%C3%A9e

Continued diversification in Cenozoic times affected one family of mesosuchians that appeared in Africa at the end of the Cretaceous. These were the dyrosaurids, [crocodilians] which inhabited shallow coastal waters early in the Tertiary. Their fossils, abundant in the phosphate deposits of southern Tunisia, show that one species, Dyrosaurus phosphaticus, has a very long, narrow snout and pointed teeth suitable for capturing fish ... 1, record 52, English, - Dyrosaurus%20phosphaticus
