Le principe du time-code est de numéroter chaque image grâce à un bloc de 80 bits représentant l’instant de la prise de vues ou de l’enregistrement. Ce time-code indique, à l’aide d’un codage BCD («Binary Coded Decimal»), l’heure (sur 24 heures), la minute, la seconde et le numéro d’image sous la forme : 14 h 12 min 28 s 13 im. Divers bits de contrôle et de service complètent ce signal.

[Le time-code] est parfois appelé time-code EBU ou time-code SMPTE, du nom des 2 organismes qui ont normalisé ses caractéristiques, l'un pour l'Europe à 25 images/seconde, l'autre pour les Amériques à 30 images/seconde.
