A rotary boring bit consisting of two to four-cone-shaped, toothed rollers which are turned by the rotation of the drill rods. They are used in hard rock in oil well boring and other deep holes down to 15,000 feet and more. Although their penetration speed is somewhat slow, roller bits last longer which is a very important factor in deep drilling.

In rolling cutter bits, the cone type bits currently manufactured have three cutters or two cutters. For general overall use the bit with three cones is a better balanced bit.

Roller-cone bits are also called rock bits. The surface of each cone is made up of rows of steel or tungsten carbide teeth or rows of tungsten carbide inserts. Tungsten carbide insert bits are usually used to drill extremely hard formations.

The drilling method by which a hole is drilled by a rotating bit to which a downward force is applied.

During the last 40 years, rotary drilling has become the preferred method for penetrating underground formations ... a special tool-the drill bit-rotates while bearing down on the bottom of the well, thus gouging and chipping its way downward ... The drill bit is connected to the surface equipment through a drill pipe, a heavy-walled tubing through which the drilling mud is fed to the bottom of the bore hole. In most cases, the drill pipe also transmits the rotation motion from a turntable at the surface to the bit at the bottom of the hole.

Rotary drilling was first used in 1901 in the Spindle Top field near Beaumont, Texas, but it was not until the 1920's that this method became the most common one.

Plasma nitriding (also known as glow discharge or Ion nitriding) is a low temperature, low distortion surface engineering process. A glow discharge plasma is used to transfer nitrogen (and in the case of plasma nitrocarburising nitrogen and carbon) to the surface of the components undergoing treatment. Operating at temperatures between 400°C and 750°C these plasma processes can produce high surface hardnesses and hardened depths up to 0.8mm.
