As used herein, the term "control law" can refer to one or more mathematical formulae used by a control system to command, manage, direct, or regulate the behavior of another device, such as a robot. Control laws can be used singularly or [in] combination to produce a control signal based on another signal (e.g., positive feedback, negative feedback, etc.) and one or more control variables. The output of the control law is a signal that is passed to the robot to cause it to move based on the difference between desired values and actual values (e.g., sensor data). For example, a PID [proportional-integral-derivative] controller combines three control laws where one control variable scales the present value of the error, another control variable scales the integral of the error, and a third control variable scales the derivative of the error. These scaled terms can then be fed back to the system to change the signal.

A test for ligamentous instability of the knee performed by stabilizing the femur while placing a valgus stress on the knee by abducting the leg. A moderate joint line separation with the knee fully extended indicates a tear of the medial collateral ligament and the posterior capsule. If the test is only positive in 30 degrees of flexion, it represents an isolated medial collateral ligament tear. A marked medial joint line opening in extension is only possible when both cruciate ligaments are also torn.

An autopilot system operates in the principle of gyroscopic rigidity in space. The system incorporates two gyroscopes to control flight in the longitudinal, lateral and vertical axes of the aircraft. If the aircraft deviates from the programmed attitude, the system computer detects the deviation and issues commands to the servo motors which move the primary flight control surfaces as required to return the aircraft to the required flight attitude. This is called aerodynamic response.
