Brightfield microscopy is the most elementary form of microscope illumination techniques ... The name "brightfield" is derived from the fact that the specimen is dark and contrasted by the surrounding bright viewing field. ... In brightfield microscopy a specimen is placed on the stage of the microscope and incandescent light from the microscope’s light source is aimed at a lens beneath the specimen. ... light passes through the specimen and then is collected by an objective lens situated in a turret above the stage. ... This technique can be used to view fixed specimens or live cells. Since many organic specimens are transparent or opaque, staining is required to cause the contrast that allows them to be visible under the microscope. 2, record 1, English, - bright%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

Carbon-14 Method. Radiocarbon dating techniques, first developed by the American chemist Willard F. Libby and his associates at the University of Chicago in 1947, are frequently useful in unravelling time-related problems in archaeology, anthropology, oceanography, pedology, climatology, and recent geology. Through metabolic activity, the level of carbon-14 in a living organism remains in constant balance with the level in the atmosphere or some other portion of the earth's dynamic reservoir, such as the ocean. Upon the organism's death, carbon-14 begins to disintegrate at a known rate, and no further replacement of carbon from atmospheric carbon dioxide can take place. The rapid disintegration of carbon-14 generally limits the dating period to approximately 50,000 years, although the method is sometimes extended to 70,000 years. Uncertainty in measurement increases with the age of the sample. Carbon dating works well on organic specimens such as wood, bone and cloth that are between 2 000 and 20 000 years old. 2, record 8, English, - carbon%2D14%20method

4, record 8, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20du%20carbone%2014

... Soil Moisture Deficit (SMD) ... is the amount of water that is required to bring a soil back to field capacity once some of the available water has been used up. Irrigation typically takes place when a predetermined SMD has been reached. This SMD may typically be 30-70% or so of the available water figure. Example: - If field capacity is 22 mm, and the available water capacity is 14 mm (this means that there is 8 mm of water which is unavailable to the plant!), then you may decide to irrigate when the SMD has reached within the range 4 mm - 10 mm (i.e. between 30% and 70% of 14 mm) : If you wait until there is a SMD of 30%, there will be 4 mm of available water left in the soil, in this example. The deficit is not brought back to field capacity in practice, but maybe 80-90% of it as this allows for any unforeseen rainfall that may occur. Thus, 90% of this example field capacity is 20 mm, (i.e. 90/100 x 22 mm). 2, record 9, English, - soil%20moisture%20deficit

1, record 13, French, - magn%C3%A9tom%C3%A8tre%20%C3%A0%20%C3%A9chantillon%20vibrant
