Lock gates. (...) Vertical gates, counterweighted and lifted by winch or other gearing mounted on an overhead gantry, can operate against water pressure; as the gate leaves the sill, water enters the chamber, supplementing or replacing the culvert supply. The turbulence is more difficult to control and the overhead gantries impose restrictions on masts and other superstructure of a vessel. 3, record 1, English, - vertical%20gate

During design, consideration of either adding an extra set of lower gates (to permit fractional chamber operation) or including a water-saving chamber (to permit saving a fraction of the water normally lost during emptying for use during filling) may be warranted. Neither has been feasible for CE locks. Staged-lifts (item 07) normally use less water than single-life locks at an expense in operating costs and transit time. 2, record 4, English, - thrift%20basin%20chamber
