The ILO (International Labour Organization) was founded in 1919, in the wake of a destructive war, to pursue a vision based on the premise that universal, lasting peace can be established only if it is based upon decent treatment of working people. The ILO became the first specialized agency of the UN in 1946. The Organization is devoted to advancing opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security, and human dignity. Its main aims are to promote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue in handling work-related issues. 6, record 6, English, - International%20Labour%20Organization

"ILO is indeed called the International Labour (with "u") Organization (with "z") in English. ILO could also refer to the Secretariat which is the International Labour Office. The use of the current spelling, i.e., Organization, began in October 1992 at which time an internal circular was issued. It should be noted that "Organisation" remains the preferred spelling found in the titles of any instruments, e.g. conventions, recommendations, etc., adopted by the International Labour Conference before that date, including the Constitution which was established in 1919 and last amended in 1974. (The 1994 edition of the Constitution was incorrectly issued as "Constitution of the International Labour Organization". The error was corrected in the February 1998 edition)." 7, record 6, English, - International%20Labour%20Organization

In 1991, in order to publicize Japan’s regime of enforced prostitution during the Second World War, activists started to collect data about the women victims of sexual slavery. After 50 years of silence, women survivors, in their 70s and 80s, came forward to demand justice and redress. One of the main outcomes of this lengthy and sustained documentation work was the Women’s International War Crimes Tribunal on Japanese Military Sexual Slavery. The Tokyo Tribunal, as it came to be called, was held in December 2000 in Tokyo. The Tribunal was attended by 70 victims and more than 1100 participants. The final judgment was passed in December 2001, at a Women’sInternational Tribunal held in The Hague, Netherlands. 1, record 10, English, - Women%27s%20International%20War%20Crimes%20Tribunal%20on%20Japanese%20Military%20Sexual%20Slavery

The Lest We Forget Project is the inspiration of Blake Seward, a history teacher at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute, in Smiths Falls, Ontario. Concerned that the contributions of those who died serving in the First World War have been largely forgotten, Seward began researching the military history of his own great uncle, who fought and died at Passchendaele. Seward soon realized that this type of research would be an exciting way to make history come alive in the classroom. It would give students the opportunity to document the life stories of the men and women who served in the First World War. 1, record 13, English, - Lest%20We%20Forget

1, record 13, French, - Nous%20nous%20souviendrons%20d%27eux

"Women in Black" was inspired by earlier movements of women who demonstrated on the streets, making a public space for women to be heard - particularly Black Sash, in South Africa, and the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, seeking the "disappeared" in the political repression in Argentina. But WIB also shares a genealogy with groups of women explicitly refusing violence, militarism and war, such as the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom formed in 1918, and the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp in the UK and related groups around the world opposing the deployment of US missiles in the eighties. ... Women in Black as we know it today began in 1988 in Israel. ... In other countries, including Canada, the USA, Australia, and many European countries, Women in Black vigils soon began to be organized in support of those in Israel. 2, record 14, English, - Women%20in%20Black
