There are numerous sections capped with iron crusts (cuirasses) ... The explanation still persists that the tabular crusts at the top of the profiles were formed by the vertical rise of the iron sesquioxides and by hardening under the rays of sun. In reality, the iron oxides do not migrate vertically from the bottom to the top of the profiles, and the crust is not formed at the soil-atmosphere interface. The latter was exposed by erosion after it has developed within a pedological profile under a forest landscape. 3, record 2, English, - cuirasse

Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Parent material, in soil science, means the underlying geological material (generally bedrock or a superficial or drift deposit) in which soil horizons form. Soils typically get a great deal of structure and minerals from their parent material. Parent materials are made up of consolidated or unconsolidated mineral material that has undergone some degree of physical or chemical weathering. ... Parent material is classified by its last means of transport. So material that was transported to a location by glacier, then deposited elsewhere by streams, that material is classified as stream transported parent material, or fluvial parent material. Glacial till refers to material dragged with a moving ice sheet. Because it is not transported with liquid water, the material is not sorted by size. 3, record 5, English, - parent%20material

The rock from which soil is formed is called parent material. The main types are: eolian, glacial till, glacial outwash, alluvium, lacustrine parent material and residual parent material, or bedrock. Pedologist uses the following formula for understanding soil formation: s = f (cl, o, r, p, t, ...) where s - soil properties; cl - regional climate; o - potential biota, r - topography; p - parent material; t - time; ... - additional variables. 4, record 5, English, - parent%20material

6, record 5, French, - mat%C3%A9riau%20parental

A Bx or BCx horizon of high bulk density and consistency that is firm and brittle when moist, and hard to extremely hard when dry. Commonly it has bleached fracture planes separating very coarse prismatic units, and frequently the secondary structure is platy. Usually the fragic horizon is similar in color to the parent material but differs from it in structure, consistency, and bulk density. Air-dried clods slake when immersed in water. The upper boundary is usually abrupt and clear but the lower boundary is diffuse.

[The] Munsell Colour Chart [or] Munsell chart is used to bring some consistency into the recording of the colours of archaeological items, features and, most commonly, soils and sediments. The chart consists of a book of coloured paint samples each individually numbered. This means that if a person records a sherd of pottery as being the same as colour sample number 10YR5/6 on the chart anyone else with a chart can see exactly what colour that is. The book contains only those colours frequently seen in soils but the Munsell system can record any colour. This system was evolved to prevent the frequent use of arbitrary descriptions of colour. 9, record 7, English, - Munsell%20soil%20colour%20chart
