A halo phenomenon consisting of a coloured arc, red on its upper margin; it extends for about 90° parallel to the horizon and lies about 46° below the Sun [or Moon].

OBS

It is produced by the refraction of light through the 90° prisms of ice crystals, having entered through the vertical sides and passing out through the horizontal bases. Normally, the crystals are large, oriented, hexagonal plates. The circumhorizontal arc is the low sky counterpart of circumzenithal arc. The circumhorizontal arc is low in the sky when the sun is high (above 58° elevation); the circumzenithal arc is high in the sky when the sun is low (below 32° elevation). The most colorful circumhorizontal arcs occur when the refraction is close to the minimum angle of deviation, and this corresponds to a solar elevation angle of about 68°. In the midlatitudes, the sun only climbs to that elevation for a few hours mid day around the summer solstice.

Predominantly green colouration of short duration, often in the form of a flash, seen at the extreme upper edge of a luminary (Sun, Moon, or even a planet) when disappearing below or appearing above the horizon.

CONT

When the sun sets, sometimes the last bit of light from the disk itself is an emerald green. The same is true of the first bit of light from the rising sun. This phenomenon is known as the "green flash" or "green ray". It is not an optical illusion. The green flash is common and will be visible any time the sun is rises or sets on a "clear", "unobstructed", and "low" horizon. ... The explanation for the green flash is thus, 1) refraction separates the solar images by color; 2) at just the right instant, the red image has set, 3) the yellow image is absorbed; and 4) the blue image is scattered away. We are left with the upper limb of the green image. Because the green flash is primarily a refraction effect, it lasts longer and is easier to see from a mountain top than from sea level.

Cette petite tache lumineuse dure à peine quelques secondes. Plus précisément, 1, 8 sec à l'équateur, 2, 5 sec à une latitude de 45 degrés. Ce phénomène de réfraction, qui ne se produit que lorsque l'atmosphère est extrêmement pure et qu'il y a très peu de particules pouvant créer de la diffraction ou dispersion, apparaît très rarement au lever ou au coucher du soleil. Comment cela se passe-t-il? La réfraction du Soleil par l'atmosphère crée un spectre vertical. Au fur et à mesure que le soleil descend sous l'horizon, les couleurs spectrales disparaissent une à une à commencer par le rouge, l'orangé, puis le jaune. Quand ces 3 couleurs sont disparues, quelques fois, à peine le temps d’un éclair, la seule couleur qui reste visible est le vert.

The natural horizon is represented by a horizon bar on the face of the instrument. The attitude of the aircraft in relation to the horizon is indicated by a split bar or, on some instruments, by a miniature airplane. A pointer at the top indicates degrees of bank on an index scale graduated from 0° to 90° right or left.

The natural horizon is represented by a horizon bar on the face of the instrument.

The attitude indicator relies on the principle of gyroscopic rigidity in space--the rapidly-spinning rotor disk resists any attempt to disturb its orientation. Thus, the gyro provides a stable horizontal reference against which the pitch and roll attitudes of the aircraft can be measured. The "artificial horizon bar" on the face of the attitude indicator is mechanically coupled to the gyro inside, so it remains parallel to the natural horizon. The instrument's little "symbolic airplane" is fixed to the instrument case, however, so it follows the roll and pitch movements of the real airplane. Consequently, the relationship of the horizon bar to the symbolic airplane is the same as the relationship between the natural horizon and the real airplane.

The attitude indicator and heading indicator are based on a gyro's rigidity in space. Because a gyro resists being tipped over, it can provide a stable reference to the real horizon or to a specific direction.

L’horizon artificiel dont se servent les pilotes d’avion est produit par un gyroscope en mouvement. Cet instrument est extrêmement important pour les pilotes puisqu’il leur indique la position de l’avion par rapport à l’horizon vrai.

OBS

Les termes «horizon terrestre» et «horizon naturel» ne sont pas de parfaits synonymes mais, en contexte de pilotage avion, on peut penser que les deux termes se confondent.
