HORLOGE INTERNE [5 records]

Record 1 2011-11-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
DEF

A gene which governs circadian rhythms.

CONT

The National Institute of Mental Health would like to call your attention to the first cloning of a gene that codes for a biological clock gene responsible for daily rhythms in mammals. NIMH grantee Dr. Joseph Takahashi and colleagues at Northwestern University report on their findings in the May 16 issue of Cell (See Northwestern University press release) ...

OBS

rigui: an ancient Chinese sundial.

Key term(s)
  • biological clock gene

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sciences biologiques
CONT

CONT

The GPS EOW rollover occurs every 1,024 weeks -- about once every 20 years. The GPS system calculates time by counting the number of weeks since January 6, 1980 -- up to a maximum of 1,023 weeks. At midnight between August 21-22, 1999, the GPS week "counter" will roll back to zero weeks. DOD says this will not create problems for the GPS satellites or DOD's GPS ground control center, but it could present a problem for consumers who use older GPS receivers and related applications. That's because after August 21, 1999, receivers could process satellite data incorrectly and display inaccurate information.

CONT

Users of the Global Positioning System (GPS) should note that GPS does not have a Y2K problem. However, a clock overflow problem, called the "Z-count roll-over" does exist and is sometimes erroneously labeled as a Y2K problem. This clock roll-over occurs every 1,024 weeks; the first roll-over having occurred Aug. 21, 1999.

CONT

The fleet of orbiting Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites experienced what officials termed "End of Week" rollover of the spacecraft's internal clock mechanisms at 13 seconds before 8 p.m. ET Saturday.

CONT

The pigment found by the UNC team is called cryptochrome and absorbs blue light. Sancar said there is evidence from the studies that the pigment is in the skin and brain as well as the eye. Understanding cryptochrome's connection to the body's internal clock could change how doctors treat certain illnesses. Sleep irregularities as temporary as jet lag and as serious as insomnia could eventually be addressed with a better understanding of the circadian rhythm. Sancar said a major benefit of the research could be new treatments for people who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a major depression that comes on with the shorter days of fall and winter.

OBS

The UNC researchers found that cryptochrome runs on vitamin B-2, hich could mean that SAD sufferers could be treated with a vitamin regimen or perhaps with gene therapy.
