C'est à la demande de monseigneur Elphège Gravel, premier évêque de Nicolet, que quatre sœurs de la Charité de Saint-Hyacinthe(premier détachement de la maison mère de Montréal en 1840) viennent fonder l'Hôtel-Dieu de Nicolet, le 18 août 1886. Au début de l'œuvre, les religieuses recevaient dans leur Hôtel-Dieu toutes les catégories de personnes ayant besoin de soins médicaux, de protection ou de garde, soit les vieillards, les orphelins, les pauvres et les malades.
