Shad Valley is a four week summer enrichment program. Students spend a month living in residence at one of our host university campuses across Canada. The program is offered to students currently completing grade 10, 11 or 12, Quebec secondaire IV, V or CEGEP I, or the International equivalent. With a focus that includes the sciences, technology and entrepreneurship, the program provides an academically stimulating, mind expanding adventure for top well-rounded students. Students will also enjoy recreational activities and the opportunity to explore local attractions.

Shad Valley consiste en un programme d’enrichissement d’été d’une durée de quatre semaines. Les élèves sont appelés à vivre en résidence pendant un mois à l'un de nos campus universitaires hôtes qui sont situés un peu partout au Canada. Le programme s’adresse aux élèves de secondaire IV ou V ou la 1re année de cégep au Québec(10e, 11e ou 12e année pour les élèves provenant de l'extérieur du Québec) ou des études équivalentes à l'étranger. Le programme, qui met l'accent sur les sciences, la technologie et l'entrepreneuriat, offre un cadre stimulant sur le plan scolaire et ouvre des horizons multiples aux élèves exceptionnels qui possèdent un bel équilibre. Les élèves ont également l'occasion de participer à des activités récréatives et d’explorer les attrait locaux qu'offre leur ville d’accueil.

Mines Caverns. Rock cavities can provide a high degree of containment and isolation for waste if suitable geologic conditions are present. ... Preferred characteristics of the host rock are: low frequency of open fractures to restrict groundwater flows, definable structure so that uncertainties in advance of excavation are low, and good rock competence so that adequately sized chambers can be excavated safely.

La barrière géologique est constituée par l’ensemble des couches de terrain qui se trouvent interposées entre le stockage et la biosphère. Elle joue un rôle essentiel dans le système d’isolement après la phase de décroissance rapide. C’est elle qui doit ralentir le processus de transfert de la radioactivité. Le milieu qui entoure immédiatement le stockage est appelé roche hôte; l’ensemble des différentes couches géologiques au-delà de la roche hôte est regroupé sous la dénomination de roche barrière. La roche hôte et la roche barrière peuvent être de composition géologique identique ou différente. La roche hôte doit posséder de bonnes qualités géotechniques pour permettre la réalisation des ouvrages de génie minier. C’est elle qui sera exposée aux effets thermiques induits par les déchets.
