Chronic viral infection underlies a wide variety of medically important diseases that either follow directly from primary infection or may require months, years or even decades to develop. Pathogens associated with significant disease, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and a number of herpes viruses remain uncontrolled. 2, record 1, English, - chronic%20viral%20infection

In April 1984, Dr. Luc Montagnier's group at the Pasteur Institute in Paris isolated a virus that he called "lymphadenopathy-associated virus", or LAV ... Less than a year later, Dr. Robert Gallo of the National Institute of Health isolated a virus from an AIDS patient that he called "human T-cell lymphotrophic virus, type three:, or HTLV-III. The two viruses were later found to be virtually identical, and thus the virus now thought to cause - or at least be one cause of - AIDS is known as LAV/HTLV III. 3, record 3, English, - LAV%2FHTLV%20III%20virus

Idiopathic CD4 lymphocytopenia (ICL) is a syndrome characterized by a low CD4 cell count that is unexplained by HIV infection or other medical conditions. Criteria for the case definition are: 1) CD4 cell count less than 300/mm3 or a CD4 percent less than 20% on two or more measurements; 2) lack of laboratory evidence of HIV infection; and 3) absence of alternative explanation for the CD4 cell lymphopenia. 1, record 5, English, - idiopathic%20CD4%20lymphocytopenia
