Causas. La lesión de codo de tenista no sólo afecta a estos deportistas, sino a todas aquellas personas que someten a esta parte del brazo a posturas forzadas repetidas o a esfuerzos prolongados. En realidad, es una sobrecarga muscular producida por la repetición de movimientos de la mano y del brazo en una posición lateral, sobre todo cuando se empuña un objeto (cuchillo, destornillador, plancha, herramientas...) que ofrece cierta resistencia.

La lesión más frecuente de extremidad superior en el tenis es la lesión lateral de codo, resultado de un esfuerzo excesivo o repetitivo sobre los tendones extensores del antebrazo, en particular los del músculo extensor corto del carpo. Más frecuente en el jugador amateur, la lesión suele ser resultado de un réves con mala técnica (golpear la bola a contragolpe, cargando la energía sólo en el antebrazo, en vez de en todo el brazo desde el hombro), de un potente saque de smash en el que se combinen pronación (palma hacia abajo) y flexión rápida de la muñeca, cargando todo el esfuerzo en los referidos tendones extensores del antebrazo.
