Frost seeding is an economical method of improving pasture and hay fields by broadcasting the seed on frozen ground. As the ground freezes and thaws, it opens and closes allowing the seed to be incorporated into the soil. This keeps the seed from germinating until there is a good moisture supply early in the spring. Legumes are the most successful for this system as they tend to be rounded, dense and most importantly, they -germinate at lower temperatures so will begin growth early in the spring. 1, record 1, English, - frost%20seeding

1, record 4, Spanish, - t%C3%A9cnica%20de%20cultivo%20en%20franjas%20de%20protecci%C3%B3n

Capillary Rise of Ground Moisture: Moisture travels upward by capillary action --as much as 14 to 18 gallons per day have been noted under a 1,000 square-foot house-- and evaporates within the crawl space. Capillary rise occurs in nearly all areas where the soil is clay or silt. Capillary action is the effect of surface tension that causes water to rise up a narrow tube, against the effect of gravity. In building construction, capillary action can occur between two surfaces placed together, or within porous materials. This relates to the installation of wood flooring in that moisture can be drawn through both the subfloor and the concrete below it. 4, record 14, English, - capillary%20rise%20of%20soil%20moisture

The active layer overlies the permafrost, and comprises earth materials that thaw from the surface and refreeze each year. It forms the interface between permafrost and the atmosphere and biosphere. The thickness of the active layer influences vegetation and soil conditions, thereby influencing hunting, gathering, forestry and agriculture. Thickness, texture and moisture content of the active layer affects foundation conditions, transportation and construction. Changes in the active layer can contribute to problems of slope instability, with subsequent impact on transportation facilities and other structures. Therefore, it is important to understand the manner in which the active layer varies locally and regionally, and to understand its response to environmental change. 3, record 38, English, - active%20layer

Polarization of the radar signal is the orientation of the electromagnetic field and is a factor in the way in which the radar signal interacts with ground objects and the resulting energy reflected back. Most radar imaging sensors are designed to transmit microwave radiation either horizontally polarized (H) or vertically polarized (V), and receive either the horizontally or vertically polarized backscattered energy. 4, record 56, English, - polarization
Record number: 56, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Polarimetric radars, like RADARDAT-2, are able to transmit and receive both horizontal and vertical polarizations. With this configuration, four linearly polarized signals are measured coherently in the scattering matrix: HH, HV, VH, and VV. Consequently, the user can derive additional information about the target to aid in the analysis. 5, record 56, English, - polarization

3, record 56, French, - polarisation
Record number: 56, Textual support number: 2 CONT
4, record 56, French, - polarisation
Record number: 56, Textual support number: 3 CONT
4, record 56, French, - polarisation

Actual Evapotranspiration (AET) ... equals PET [potential evapotranspiration], if the maximum percolation (i.e. adjusted precipitation less overland runoff) is greater than or equal to PET. If maximum percolation is less than PET, then there is not enough new moisture to entirely satisfy PET. 4, record 70, French, - air%20du%20sol

Record number: 74, Textual support number: 1 CONT

Record number: 80, Textual support number: 1 OBS

... Soil Moisture Deficit (SMD) ... is the amount of water that is required to bring a soil back to field capacity once some of the available water has been used up. Irrigation typically takes place when a predetermined SMD has been reached. This SMD may typically be 30-70% or so of the available water figure. Example: - If field capacity is 22 mm, and the available water capacity is 14 mm (this means that there is 8 mm of water which is unavailable to the plant!), then you may decide to irrigate when the SMD has reached within the range 4 mm - 10 mm (i.e. between 30% and 70% of 14 mm) : If you wait until there is a SMD of 30%, there will be 4 mm of available water left in the soil, in this example. The deficit is not brought back to field capacity in practice, but maybe 80-90% of it as this allows for any unforeseen rainfall that may occur. Thus, 90% of this example field capacity is 20 mm, (i.e. 90/100 x 22 mm). 2, record 92, English, - soil%20moisture%20deficit
