3, record 13, French, - nanoparticule%20d%27or

It is a technique used in genetic studies that allows the detection and quantification of mRNA [messenger ribonucleic acid] It is a very sensitive method that shows whether or not a specific gene is being expressed in a given sample. RT-PCR is a very important test in the field of Genetically-Modified Organisms (GMO's) because it gives researchers a mechanism to test whether any specific gene is turned on (active) or turned off (inactive). This allows researchers to identify the benefits of genetically-modified organisms with respect to their "natural" counterparts and search for any significant differences in which genes are expressed in the two types of organisms. 3, record 15, English, - reverse%20transcription%2Dpolymerase%20chain%20reaction

1, record 48, French, - mutag%C3%A9n%C3%A8se%20dirig%C3%A9e%20%C3%A0%20l%27aide%20d%27un%20oligonucl%C3%A9otide%20synth%C3%A9tique

[Plasmids] generally account for only a small fraction of the total host cell DNA, they often carry vital genes, such as those that confer resistance to antibiotics. Because it is so much smaller, plasmid DNA can easily be separated from the DNA of the host cell and purified. For use as cloning vectors, such purified plasmid DNA molecules are cut once with a restriction nuclease and then annealed to the DNA fragment that is to be cloned. The hybrid plasmid DNA molecules produced are then reintroduced into bacteria that have been made transiently permeable to macromolecules. Only some of the treated cells will take up a plasmid. They can be selected by the antibiotic resistance conferred on them by the plasmid since they alone will grow in the presence of antibiotic. As these bacteria divide, the plasmid also replicates to produce an enormous number of copies of the original DNA fragment. 1, record 52, English, - plasmid%20DNA

Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (LSCM, also referred to as CSLM, Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy) is now established as a valuable tool for obtaining high resolution images and 3-D reconstructions of a variety of biological specimens. In LSCM, a laser light beam is expanded to make optimal use of the optics in the objective. Through a x-y deflection mechanism this beam is turned into a scanning beam, focussed to a small spot by an objective lens onto a fluorescent specimen. The mixture of reflected light and emitted fluorescent light is captured by the same objective and (after conversion into a static beam by the x-y scanner device) is focused onto a photodetector (photomultiplier) via a dichroic mirror (beam splitter). The reflected light is deviated by the dichroic mirror while the emitted fluorescent light passes through in the direction of the photomultiplier. A confocal aperture (pinhole) is placed in front of the photodetector, such that the fluorescent light (not the reflected light!) from points on the specimen that are not within the focal plane (the so called out-of-focus light) where the laser beam was focussed will be largly obstructed by the pinhole. In this way, out-of-focus information (both above and below the focal plane) is greatly reduced. 2, record 64, English, - confocal%20laser%20scanning%20microscopy

2, record 65, French, - effet%20g%C3%A9n%C3%A9tique

Simply put, an array is an orderly arrangement of samples. An array experiment can make use of common assay systems such as microplates or standard blotting membranes, and can be created by hand or make use of robotics to deposit the sample. In general, arrays are described as macroarrays or microarrays, the difference being the size of the sample spots. Macroarrays contain sample spot sizes of about 300 microns or larger and can be easily imaged by existing gel and blot scanners, such as Storm, FluorImager, or Personal Densitometer. The sample spot sizes in microarrays are typically about 200 microns in diameter or smaller and these arrays usually contains thousands of spots. 3, record 76, English, - macroarray

2, record 76, French, - jeu%20ordonn%C3%A9%20de%20macro%C3%A9chantillons

Whereas in an aromatic molecule there is continuous overlap of p-orbitals over a cyclic array of atoms, in a homoaromatic molecule there is a formal discontinuity in this overlap resulting from the presence of a single sp3 hybridized atom within the ring; p-orbital overlap apparently bridges this sp3 centre, and features associated with aromaticity are manifest in the properties of the compound. Pronounced homoaromaticity is not normally associated with neutral molecules, but mainly with species bearing a formal electrical charge, e.g., the "homotropylium" cation C8 H9+ ... 1, record 80, English, - homoaromatic

Proteoglycans of bone-marrow stromal cells and their extracellular matrix are important components of the microenvironment of haematopoietic tissues. Proteoglycans might also be involved in the interaction of haematopoietic stem and stromal cells. Recently, several studies have been reported on the proteoglycan synthesis of stromal cells, but little is known about the proteoglycan synthesis of haematopoietic stem or progenitor cells. Here we report on the isolation and characterization of proteoglycans from two haematopoietic progenitor cell lines, the murine FDCP-Mix A4 and the human TF-1 cell line. 2, record 88, English, - hematopoietic%20progenitor

Primed in situ labeling (PRINS) is a fast alternative to traditional in situ hybridization, requiring only a tew handling steps (1,2). In the PRINS reaction, an unlabeled sequence-specific oligonucleotide primer or short DNA fragment is hybridized (annealed) to denatures chromosomal DNA and extended in situ in the presence of hapten-labeled nucleotide triphos phates by a suitable DNA polymerase (3). The technique is especially suited for the rapid identification of chromo somes with oligonucleotide primers specific for individual chromosomal sequences and chromosomal elements like centromer or satellite sequences. 2, record 89, English, - primed%20in%20situ%20labeling%20of%20nucleic%20acids

Technological developments have made possible extension of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis to individual cells to localize DNA/RNA with non-radioactive labels at the light microscopic level. This approach, In Situ PCR, is particularly useful in resolving low-frequency message expression in mixed populations of cells and tissues. We have established a working protocol for direct In Situ PCR and have utilized several controls to validate our results. 1, record 96, English, - In%20Situ%20PCR

1, record 96, French, - PCR%20in%20situ

Tomato ringspot nepovirus (TomRSV) infects small fruits and tree fruits. Coat and movement proteins of TomRSV are expressed coordinately via proteolytic processing of a polyprotein precursor at specific cleavage sites by a virus-encoded protease. Therefore the two cleavage sites involved in the release of the coat and movement proteins from the precursor polyprotein must be recognized at equal efficiency by the TomSVP protease. These results provide important information toward the inhibitors of viral proteases, which has potential as a novel strategy for engineering resistance to plant viruses. 1, record 100, English, - precursor%20polyprotein
