Au sens strict, un objet de taille nanométrique occupe un volume de moins de 103 nm3. Il est formé de 105 atomes. Aussi, le terme de «molecular technologies»(par opposition à «bulk technologies») est souvent préféré à «nanotechnologie». Mais lorsque l'on parle de nanotechnologie il se peut que l'on étende ce domaine extrêmement réduit à tout ce qui est théories, techniques ou mécanismes visant à manipuler ou à fabriquer des objets de taille comparable à celle des composants élémentaires de la matière.
