The RADARSAT Antarctic Mapping Mission (AMM) has important significance for the scientific community. Almost 70% of the Earth's fresh water is contained in the Antarctic region, and changes in this enormous reservoir directly influence world sea levels and climate. The new digital radar map will provide an unprecedented detailed portrayal of the surface form and features of the ice sheet. This RADARSAT based map will help scientists to better understand the dynamic behaviour of the ice sheet and provide them with a greater insight into the effects of human activity on the Southern Continent.

La Mission de cartographie de l'Antarctique par RADARSAT est d’une grande importance pour la communauté scientifique puisque cette région contient près de 70 pour 100 des réserves d’eau douce de la planète et que toute modification touchant cet immense réservoir a une incidence directe sur le climat et le niveau des eaux dans le monde entier. Une mosaïque d’images numériques haute résolution de l'inlandsis et des parties non recouvertes du continent sera constituée à partir d’images RADARSAT. La nouvelle carte radar numérique fournira un relevé d’un niveau de précision sans précédent des caractéristiques et du relief de l'inlandsis. Cette carte constituée à partir d’images RADARSAT aidera les scientifiques à mieux comprendre le comportement dynamique de l'inlandsis ainsi que les répercussions de l'activité humaine sur le continent austral.

These ice streams drain a large area of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and have been the focus of much research to better understand the stability of the Ice Sheet, and the potential contribution of changes in ice flux to global sea level. The RADARSAT interferometric data will provide new information on the motion of these ice streams and future missions can accurately monitor ice flux and detect changes in a way that was impossible prior to the existence of this kind of data.

Ces courants couvrent une vaste portion de l'inlandsis de l'ouest de l'Antarctique. Ils ont fait l'objet de nombreux travaux de recherche sur la stabilité de l'inlandsis et les effets éventuels des variations de l'écoulement des glaces sur le niveau des mers du globe. Les données d’interférométrie captées par RADARSAT permettront de mieux comprendre le mouvement de ces courants glaciaires. Dans le cadre de missions futures, il sera possible de surveiller de près l'écoulement des glaces et de détecter les changements comme jamais auparavant.
