3, record 1, French, - granulom%C3%A9trie%20laser

When we examined relative risks of BP [benzene poisoning] by intensity of exposure at 1.5 years prior to the diagnosis of benzene poisoning, compared to subjects who have less than 5 ppm exposure at that time, we obtained RRs [relative risks] of 2.2 (95% CI=1.7-2.9), 4.7 (95% CI=3.4-6.5), and 7.2 (95% CI=5.3-9.8) for intensity of 5 to 19 ppm, 20 to 39 ppm, and >/= 40 ppm categories. 6, record 20, English, - exposure%20level

Do not confuse with "exposure intensity". The term "intensity" refers to the degree or amount of some quality, condition; it expresses the force, strength, energy, degree of some characteristic quality. The term "level" designates a position on a scale in respect of amount, intensity, extent, or the like; it expresses the relative amount or intensity of any property, attribute, or activity. Since the level studied corresponds most of the time to an observed concentration of a substance, the two expressions "exposure level" and "exposure concentration" can often be used interchangeably even if they are not true synonyms. One must choose according to the context. See also "exposure score." 7, record 20, English, - exposure%20level

1, record 44, French, - indice%20actinothermique

The radiation receiver station consists of two identical manganin strips whose temperatures are measured by attached thermocouples. One of the strips is shaded, while the other is exposed to sunlight. An electrical heating current is passed through the shaded strip so as to raise its temperature to that of the exposed strip. The electric power required to accomplish this is a measure of the solar radiation. 2, record 55, English, - Angstrom%20pyrheliometer

1, record 55, French, - pyrh%C3%A9liom%C3%A8tre%20d%27Angstr%C3%B6m

Rayleigh scattering of sunlight from particles in the atmosphere is the reason why the light from the sky is blue. The amount of Rayleigh scattering that occurs to a beam of light is dependent upon the size of the particles and the wavelength of the light; in particular, the scattering coefficient, and hence the intensity of the scattered light, varies inversely with the fourth power of the wavelength, a relation known as the Rayleigh law. 3, record 59, English, - Rayleigh%20scattering

3, record 59, French, - diffusion%20de%20Rayleigh

The shoeboxsized spectrophotometer - called MAESTRO (Measurements of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation) - is the most advanced in a long line of MSC instruments that have flown on balloons, high-altitude research aircraft and space shuttle missions over the past 10 years. MAESTRO and other spectrophotometers operate on the principle that different gases absorb different wavelengths of light, ranging from short, ultraviolet (UV) rays to long, near-infrared ones. Each gas, therefore, has its own "fingerprint" or distinct spectrum of absorption. This makes it possible to identify which gases are present from changes in the brightness of sunlight at different wavelengths between light coming directly from the Sun and light that has passed through the atmosphere on the way to the spectrophotometer. Ozone, for example, absorbs UV light and is, therefore, essential to preventing high levels of these rays from reaching the Earth's surface. As the Sun rises and sets, its rays slice through different layers of the atmosphere and out into space. MAESTRO will be equipped with more than 2000 separate detectors record the full spectrum of wavelengths emitted by direct sunlight and by sunlight travelling through these layers. These data will then be analyzed to provide precise measurements of gases and aerosol particles at different heights in the atmosphere. SCISAT-1 will orbit the Earth 15 times a day at a height of 650 kilometres, allowing MAESTRO to take measurements of 30 sunrises and sunsets every 24 hours. 3, record 66, English, - spectrophotometer%20MAESTRO

2, record 66, French, - spectrophotom%C3%A8tre%20MAESTRO

EVARM is designed for use with the NASA Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or spacesuit, worn by both Space Station and Space Shuttle crewmembers during Station operations. The experiment consists of a storage/badge reader unit and 12 badges - a set of three each for up to four spacewalkers. The sets are designated EV-1, EV-2, EV-3 and EV-4, corresponding to the designation of each potential spacewalker. When not in use, the badges are placed in the storage-reader box, which is stored in the Human Research Facility payload rack. The badge contains a silicon chip specially designed by Thomson-Nielsen - called a Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) - that continuously measures total radiation dosage and a connector that plugs into the badge reader. The reader that can download badge is shown placed in a pocket in the lower left leg of an astronaut liquid cooling garment. Badges also are placed in the front torso and fabric communications cap of the spacesuit undergarment (NASA/JSC). During normal operations, the Station crew will record the background radiation dosage on each badge and transmit it to the ground every week. Shortly before a spacewalk by Station or Shuttle crew members, the crew will measure the radiation dosage of each badge to be used in the spacewalk. A set of three badges will be inserted into pockets sewn into the front torso and front leg areas of the liquid cooling undergarment and the top of the fabric communications cap of each spacesuit. Those locations were selected because of the radiation hazard to sensitive soft tissues such as eyes and internal organs, as well as the hazard to the skin on the arms and legs, which are not as well shielded as the torso. Shortly after the spacewalk, the crew will plug each badge set into the badge reader. They will later transfer the data to the Human Research Facility laptop computer for transmission to the payload team on the ground. 6, record 74, English, - extra%20vehicular%20activity%20radiation%20monitor

4, record 80, French, - rayonnement%20des%20corps

The term "level" designates a position on a scale in respect of amount, intensity, extent, or the like; it expresses the relative amount or intensity of any property, attribute, or activity.

4, record 85, French, - intensit%C3%A9%20d%27exposition

Photons emitted in one region of a source may be partly absorbed by atoms at lower excitation levels in their passage through the plasma. Because of the fact that the absorption profile is of a similar shape to the emission profile, energy is preferentially absorbed from the central part of the emission line. Maximum absorption occurs at the centre of the line or central wavelength. The actual line profile of the transmitted radiation is changed as a result of the lowering of the maximum intensity. This is the cause of the increase in the apparent full width at half maximum. This is termed self-absorption broadening. 1, record 97, English, - self%2Dabsorption%20broadening

1, record 97, French, - %C3%A9largissement%20par%20autoabsorption

Occurs in emission sources of finite thickness when radiant energy quanta emitted by atoms (or molecules) are absorbed by atoms of the same kind present in the same source. The absorbed energy is usually dissipated by collisional transfer of energy, or through emission of radiant energy of the same or other frequencies. In consequence, the observed radiant intensity of a spectral line (or band component) emitted by a source may be less than the radiant intensity would be from an optically thin source having the same number of emitting atoms. Self-absorption may occur in all emitting sources to some degree, whether they are homogeneous or not. 1, record 99, English, - self%2Dabsorption

1, record 100, French, - d%C3%A9chet%20irradiant
