Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
3, record 2, French, - gloire

The light is made of particles (photons) but is also a wave. Its properties depend on its wavelength: longer waves are less energetic than shorter waves --photons with long wavelength have less energy than short-wavelength photons. Therefore, there are different kinds of electromagnetic radiation: infrared, radio waves, microwaves, gamma rays, X rays, etc. Only a small fraction can be detected by the human eye: the visible light --what in everyday-life is referred to simply as 'light'. The human eye cannot detect wavelengths larger than those of the visible light, such as those of infrared light, microwaves (wavelengths of centimetres), or radio waves (wavelength sofmetres). Wavelengths shorter than visible light cannot be seen either: ultraviolet light, X-rays, gamma rays (the most energetic). 3, record 10, English, - light

2, record 18, French, - rayon%20cr%C3%A9pusculaire

The Doppler effect on sound waves is experienced in everyday life. When an ambulance passes us, the siren appears to change its note. As it approaches, the pitch is high. As it passes us, the pitch falls. The effect occurs with any type of waves, including light. In the case of sound the effect was described by Christian Andreas Doppler (1803-1853), while for the light it was observed by Armand Fizeau (1819-1896). Effet Doppler.

Colours with different spectral compositions can look alike. An important function of colorimetry is to determine whether a pair of such metameric colours will look alike. It has long been the practice in colorimetry to make use of sets of colour-matching functions to calculate tristimulus values for colours: equality of tristimulus values for a pair of colours indicates that the colour appearances of the two colours match, when they are viewed in the same conditions by an observer for whom the colour-matching functions apply. 2, record 26, English, - metameric%20tints

A solar halo is a luminous ring that is sometimes seen surrounding the Sun. Some parts of the halo are very bright, others are not very bright. Sometimes, only a part of the ring is visible. Within the solar halo, on opposite sides of the Sun, there can be two very bright spots called "sun dogs" or "mock suns." The halo is produced as sunlight is reflected and refracted through tiny, flat ice crystals in the atmosphere. Sun dogs and halos always are at an angle of 22° away from the Sun, due to the hexagonal structure of the ice crystals. The diameter of the halo is about an eighth of the sky. 1, record 35, English, - solar%20halo

Visual awareness primarily involves seeing what is directly in front of you, but it can be influenced by a three-dimensional representation of the object in view retained by the brain. If you see the back of a person's head, the brain infers that there is a face on the front of it. We know this is true because we would be very startled if a mirror revealed that the front was exactly like the back. 1, record 54, English, - visual%20awareness

Brief flashes of colored light enable researchers to infer the minimum time required for visual awareness. A disk of red light is projected for 20 milliseconds, followed immediately by a 20- millisecond flash of green light. But the observer reports seeing a single flash of yellow, the color that would be apparent if red and green were projected simultaneously. The subject does not become aware of red followed by green until the length of the flashes is extended to 60 to 70 milliseconds. 1, record 54, English, - visual%20awareness

1, record 54, French, - perception%20visuelle%20consciente
